Tutino Taken First Overall in CWHL Draft

August 22, 2016

TORONTO - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standout Kayla Tutino was taken first overall at the 2016 CWHL Draft, held on Sunday.

Selected by the Boston Blades, Tutino was one of two Terriers chosen in the first round. Les Canadiennes took Sarah Lefort with the fifth overall pick. Three Terriers have now been chosen in the top five of the CWHL Draft over the last two years; 2016 CWHL MVP Marie-Philip Poulin was the third overall pick by Les Canadiennes in the 2015 draft.

Two other Terriers were taken in Sunday's draft, both by the Blades. Dakota Woodworth was a fifth-round choice and Alexis Woloschuk was drafted in the seventh round. Woloschuk recently signed with HV71 in Sweden.

Tutino joins Rick DiPietro of the men's ice hockey team as the only Boston University athletes to be selected with the first overall pick in a professional draft. DiPietro was chosen first in the 2000 NHL Draft. Lefort has now been drafted by organizations in two leagues, as she was a second-round selection in last year's NWHL Draft by the Buffalo Beauts.

BU now boasts several players over the CWHL and NWHL entering the 2016-17 season. Tutino and Woodworth will join Tara Watchorn on the Blades, while Lefort and Poulin will skate for Les Canadiennes. Louise Warren won the CWHL's Clarkson Cup with the Calgary Inferno last year and Jenelle Kohanchuk is a member of the Toronto Furies.

In the NWHL, Rebecca Russo signed with the New York Riveters earlier this summer. She will play with Kaleigh Fratkin, who also inked a deal with the Riveters in the offseason. Shannon Doyle will once again skate with the Connecticut Whale. Senior Maddie Elia was chosen by the Buffalo Beauts in the 2016 NWHL Draft, though she will remain with the Terriers for the upcoming campaign. Full rosters for both leagues will be announced in the coming weeks.
