No. 2 Men's Ice Hockey Blanked by Minnesota State, 3-0
October 14, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team could not solve the Minnesota State defense on Saturday evening, dropping a 3-0 contest to the visiting Mavericks at Agganis Arena.
Minnesota State used a power play to open the scoring at 7:15 of the second period and then bumped up their lead just over six minutes later. A late empty-netter sealed the weekend sweep for the Mavericks, who now stand at 2-1-0 on the year. The Terriers move to an even 2-2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period in which the teams combined for five unsuccessful power plays, the Mavericks used a too many men penalty on the Terriers to open the scoring.
- Nicolas Rivera knocked in a rebound at the top of the crease following a slap shot from above the left circle by Ian Scheid at 7:15 of the middle stanza.
- Minnesota State had a goal taken away after a video review midway through the second but BU was unable to take any momentum from the reversed call.
- A third effort in front gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead as C.J. Suess punched the puck past BU netminder Jake Oettinger at the 13:56 mark of the second following two saved shots by Zeb Knutson.
- Jason Pawlowski stopped all 26 shots he faced in the MSU goal and Marc Michaelis added a late emtpy-netter to create the 3-0 final.
GAME NOTES
- The Mavericks held a 28-26 shot advantage, including a 14-4 margin in the second period.
- BU was held without a power-play goal for the first time this season, coming up empty on four chances.
- The Mavericks were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
- Sophomore Jake Oettinger made 25 saves in goal for the Terriers.
- This marked the first time since Nov. 19 of last season that the Terriers were shut out at home.
FROM COACH QUINN
- "Tonight, it was more disappointing because we lost. I thought that we did a lot of things that we didn't do last night. I thought we competed. I thought we were physical. I thought we had a good first period but couldn't get a power-play goal. Second period, they started coming at us a bit more. When we face adversity in the middle of the game, we tend to feel sorry for ourselves. That's kind of what was going on tonight."
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Oct. 20) when they host UConn in their Hockey East opener.
- Game time is 7:30 p.m.
