TURNING POINT
- With BU trailing 7-4, junior Hayden Ruiz scored two of the final three goals in regulation, including the tying goal with 1:33 remaining in regulation. Ruiz also assisted on Homire's goal that made it 7-6 with 2:35 to play.
- Then, while still a man up to start the second overtime, Ruiz found Homire for the deciding goal.
HAYDEN AND HOMIRE THE HEROES
- All of Ruiz' career-high four points came in the fourth quarter or overtime. He matched his career high with two goals and did the same for his single-game best in assists with two. Ruiz had previously recorded three points twice in his collegiate career, most recently at High Point in 2016.
- Homire finished with three points (2g, 1a), with both his goals coming in the final minutes of the contest. He also assisted on a man-up goal late in the second half to tie the game, 3-3.
- Senior goaltender Christian Carson-Banister was outstanding on Saturday, making 16 saves for the Terriers.
- He had a crucial stop in the first overtime on a close-range chance to keep the game tied.
- Five of his stops came in the opening quarter and he stopped all four shots he faced in the fourth quarter as BU made its comeback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Providence scored the first goal of the game just 1:22 into the contest, but junior Jack Wilson (1g, 1a) answered with the Terriers' first goal of 2017 to tie the game with 7:02 left in the opening quarter.
- The Friars took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter and extended that advantage to 3-1 during a timer-on situation with less than five minutes to go in the half, but senior Cal Dearth (1g) cut that lead in half with a goal with 1:22 left. Then, during an extra-man opportunity, freshman John MacLean's (1g) first collegiate goal sent the teams to the locker room tied, 3-3.
- Providence came out of the break with four straight goals before junior Ryan Hilburn's first goal of the game made it a 7-4 game after three quarters.
- Ruiz made it a 7-5 Providence lead with 8:43 remaining in regulation when he drove from X and scored from the near side thanks to Hilburn's third assist of the game.
- After Homire cut the deficit to 7-6, Ruiz sent the game to overtime when he found himself alone on the right side and sprinted to the net before finishing the play.
- The Terriers won the opening faceoff in overtime and nearly won it when MacLean rang a shot off the post.
- BU enjoyed two man-up chances in the extra periods, finally converting at the tail end of the latter one to emerge victorious.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers have only been to overtime twice in their now four-year history. BU also needed double overtime that day, defeating then-No. 16 Navy at home, 10-9, on Feb. 27, 2016.
- Wilson extended his point streak to 28 games with his two-point day.
- Junior Joe Stucky took the opening faceoff for the first time as a Terrier and finished 8-of-16 at the X with four ground balls in a valiant performance.
- BU went 3-of-7 during man-up situations and only allowed Providence to have three EMOs.
NEXT UP
- BU will continue its four-game road stretch to start 2017 when the Terriers travel to UMass Lowell on Feb. 11 (1 p.m.).
