Record-Breaking Comm Ave Classic Raises $65K
July 14, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - A crowd of over 2,700 fans invaded Walter Brown Arena on Friday night for the third annual Comm Ave Charity Classic between hockey alumni from Boston University and Boston College to raise money for the Travis Roy Foundation and Compassionate Care ALS. This year's event raised a record $64,481 to bring the three-year total to over $110,000.
The BU alumni came on top by a score of 8-6 thanks to a pair of five-point performances from Garrett Noonan (3g, 2a) and Mike Moran (2g, 3a). The teams had previously split the previous two CACC meetings with BU winning the inaugural game in 2015 before the Eagles came out on top in 2016.
Sixteen former Terriers came back to campus to participate in the event, ranging from Freddy Meyer, who starred at BU from 1999-03, all to way to Charlie McAvoy, who signed with the Boston Bruins this past spring after an All-American sophomore season with the Terriers.
Former BC players Pat Mullane and Andrew Orpik started the event in 2015 in honor of longtime BC sports information director Dick Kelley, who lost his battle with ALS in 2014, and former BC baseball captain Pete Frates, who continues to put up an inspirational fight against the disease. Now the event supports both the Travis Roy Foundation and Compassionate Care ALS. Roy, who was paralyzed in his first college hockey game as a Terrier at Walter Brown nearly 22 years ago, has helped hundreds of others who have suffered spinal-cord injuries through his foundation.
Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel came back to campus for his first CACC and potted a pair of goals. Sean Sullivan, captain of the 2006-07 squad, also scored for the Terriers.
