No. 19 LSU Outlasts Terriers in NCAA First Round on PKs, 2-1

BATON ROUGE, La. – Making its return to the NCAA Tournament, the Boston University women's soccer team battled No. 19 LSU into double overtime, but fell 2-1 in penalty kicks Sunday afternoon in the first round at LSU Soccer Stadium.
McKenna Kennedy converted the opening penalty kick for the Terriers, while Morgan Messner stopped LSU's first three attempts. The Tigers were able to deliver under pressure, converted on its fourth kick to tie up the score before slotting the decisive fifth kick to advance to the second round.

- Anna Heilferty set the pace with three shots through the first 10 minutes.
- Libby Closson just missed putting the Terriers on the board in the 28th minute, ripping a shot from just outside the 18 that banged off the post.
- Royce Light and Taylor Kofton flicked headers in the 28th and 32nd minute, though each landed above the crossbar.
- Messner made a spectacular stop in 38th minute, diving to her left to make a full-extension save on the Tigers' first shot on goal.
- Dorrie Varley-Barrett missed by mere inches from slotting one past LSU's keeper, tapping a loose ball in front of the goal line that LSU's Caroline Brockmeier made a diving stop on in the 60th minute.
- The Terriers pressed by placing five of its first six shots to start the second half on frame. However, its last 10 shots of the frame missed the net, as the game headed into overtime.
- LSU had the best look of the first overtime frame, lifting a rainbow shot from 25 yards out that nearly dropped in under the crossbar four minutes in.
- Neither team had a quality look in the second stanza of extra time, sending the match into penalty kicks.
- Sunday was the lone contest of the NCAA Tournament First Round games that was decided in penalty kicks.
