Terriers Wrap Up San Diego Classic with Win over SDSU, Loss to Oregon State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After leaving 11 on base in a hard-fought 4-1 loss to 2017 NCAA participant Oregon State, the Boston University softball team bounced back with a 1-0 victory at San Diego State on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the San Diego Classic.

Senior Emma Wong delivered what proved to be the game-winning two-out RBI triple in the fourth for the Terriers (7-6), as freshman Cali Dolfi (3-1) limited the Aztecs (8-12) to five hits with the help of two strikeouts to claim her first-career shutout. In the first game, the Beavers (12-8) scored the first run in the first inning and then broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third with three runs to pull away for the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

GAME TWO: BU 1, San Diego State 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Aztecs led off in the bottom of the first with a single but were unable to advance the runner against Dolfi.
After junior Madi Killebrew hit an infield single in the top of the fourth and was replaced by senior Jilee Schanda at first on a fielder's choice, Wong tripled to left center with two outs.
SDSU hit a single in the fifth and added two more in the sixth but could not get the timely hit.
The Aztecs had one more gasp in the seventh with a one-out single and walk.
Senior shortstop Brittany Younan helped seal the victory though by collecting two groundballs and getting an out at third and then first on the final at-bat.

GAME ONE: Oregon St. 4, BU 1

The Beavers got on the board with a single and then advanced the runner on a wild pitch and groundout before delivering a sacrifice fly to right.
BU loaded the bases in the third on a fielding error, Younan's double and junior Alex Heinen's walk.
Killebrew earned an RBI walk, but the Terriers were unable to add more with a pair of strikeouts and groundout.
In the bottom half, OSU took the lead against sophomore Kali Magane (0-1) on two singles and a walk with the help of a throwing error.
The Beavers then loaded the bases on a walk against sophomore Lizzie Annerino before getting an RBI ground out and a two-out RBI single up the middle for a 4-1 lead.
The Terriers had two runners in the fourth and fifth before loading the bases in the sixth with two outs.
Nerissa Eason (1-0) benefitted from a double-play and error-free defense during the final four innings to claim the victory.
Both teams finished with seven hits in the contest.

DOUBLEHEADER NOTES

With Dolfi pitching a shutout against San Diego State, the Terriers now have two this season in 13 contests alongside the 3-0 victory over Michigan State ... Last regular season, BU had two total in 31 contests against North Florida and San Diego.
Freshman Jen Horita, Killebrew, junior Emily Morrow and Wong all had two hits apiece on the day.
BU claimed its first-ever win over San Diego State after allowing a combined 27 runs in the first four meetings ... The Aztecs won 8-0 (5 inn.) at home last year before edging the Terriers, 11-10 (8 inn.), at Cal State Fullerton.
Already owning wins over the Big Ten (Michigan State), Big 12 (Oklahoma), and ACC (Duke), the Terriers will have one more shot against the Pac-12 this season when the face No. 3 UCLA on Saturday, March 10.

NEXT UP: LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

BU will continue its spring break trip in California with a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (March 6) with first pitch is set for 12 p.m. PT.
The Terriers split with the Lions last season, bouncing back from a 6-2 loss with a 3-1 victory.
