BOSTON - On Sept. 1, the Boston University men's lacrosse team once again participated in Bike to the Beach, a 100-mile bike ride that raises money and awareness for autism.
This was the fourth straight year that the Terriers participated in the Bike to the Beach. Several players, coaches and members of the team's support staff completed the 100-mile ride from Boston to Newport, Rhode Island, with other team members supporting the riders at rest stops along the route. This year, the men's lacrosse team raised a program-record $35,000 for the cause, making it the largest annual fundraising event by a single team at Boston University. In its four years of work with Bike to the Beach, BU men's lacrosse has raised more than $112,000.
"I'm extremely proud of our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who either completed the challenging 100-mile bike ride or volunteered along the route and made this event a huge success," head coach Ryan Polley said. "This is a day we have circled on the calendar every year, and every year it's great to see the enthusiasm our program has for Bike to the Beach. I'm also truly grateful for everyone who helped contribute to our record amount of $35,000 raised for autism research."
Founded in 2007, Bike to the Beach's mission is to raise funds and awareness for autism, while promoting fun and fitness through cycling. Donations are made to Autism Speaks and other local autism charities to aid in their efforts to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum, a neurological disorder that affects one out of every 68 children.
