The Boston University women's ice hockey team will begin a home-and-home series with Holy Cross on Friday night at Hart Center. The teams will then head to Walter Brown Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Friday will be the first of three Turnpike Trophy tilts between the two teams, the first time that ice hockey has been a part of the annual rivalry series between BU and Holy Cross. The Terriers currently have a 5-0 lead over the Crusaders this year thanks to victories in field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's cross country.
ANOTHER ONE
- Holy Cross will be the 31st Division I team that the Terriers have played in program history, and the Crusaders will be the 29th current Division I program that the Terriers have skated against.
- After this weekend, only Bemidji State, Colgate, Lindenwood and Syracuse will be unfamiliar foes for the Terriers.
- Hart Center will be the 40th different rink that the Terriers have played in during the program's 14-year history.
HEAR ABOUT HOLY CROSS
- The Crusaders are in their first full season in Division I.
- They came less than a second from earning their second league win of the season, but Maine equalized with 0.4 ticks left on the clock to earn a 2-2 tie on Saturday in Worcester.
- Holy Cross then lost to Maine, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon, to fall to 0-5-1 in its last six games.
- The Crusaders are 1-19-3 overall, but the one win came against No. 3 Northeastern, 5-3, on Nov. 30.
- Freshman Carlie Magier (5g, 5a) junior Rachel Moore (5g, 5a) and senior Julie Matthias (4g, 6a) are all tied for the team lead with 10 points.
- Senior Maeve Reilly leads the squad with six goals while Matthias' six assists are best on the team.
- Freshman goaltender Jada Brenon has started 13 of the 14 games in which she has appeared, including the victory against Northeastern.
- Brenon owns a 4.00 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage.
- Sophomore Julia Pelletier has played 11 games, posting a 4.57 GAA and an .881 save percentage.
KEEP PROTECTING THOSE LEADS
- BU improved to 9-0-2 this season when leading after two periods after its sweep of Providence.
- The Terriers are an impressive 24-2-4 when leading after 40 minutes over the last two seasons.
- BU is even better when leading by two or more goals after two periods, having lost only once in program history when holding such an advantage after 40 minutes of play.
SCORING FIRST HELPS, TOO
- BU is now 9-0-2 this season when scoring first following its pair of victories over the Friars.
- Conversely, the Terriers are just 2-6-3 when giving up the first goal.
- Only 10 of the Terriers' 43 wins over the past three seasons have come when they fall behind 1-0.
SCHROEDER IS DECEMBER'S BEST
- Sophomore Corinne Schroeder was named the National Goaltender of the Month on Monday.
- Schroeder posted a .964 save percentage, best among Division I goalies that made at least two starts, and a 1.02 goals-against average en route to a 3-0-1 record in December.
- She began the month with a 37-save performance in a 4-2 win over BC on Dec. 1 and then followed that by stopping 49 of the 50 shots she faced in a weekend sweep at RIT.
- The sophomore then closed the month with 20 saves in a 1-1 tie with Penn State on Dec. 30.
SCHROEDER NABS WEEKLY AWARD, TOO
- For the second straight week, sophomore Corinne Schroeder was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
- She made 58 saves in the weekend sweep of No. 8 Providence, including 32 stops in Saturday's 4-2 win.
- Schroeder stopped all 17 shots she faced in Saturday's third period, which included seven saves on the penalty kill.
FRESHMEN PHENOMENAL AGAINST PC
- All five Terrier rookies that played this past weekend recorded at least one point in the sweep of Providence.
- Kaleigh Donnelly led the way with three assists, including a two-assist effort in the 4-2 win on Jan. 12.
- Donnelly assisted on the game-winner in that 4-2 triumph.
- Alex Allan had the primary assist on Mackenna Parker's goal in Saturday's win, a game in which Courtney Correia opened the scoring.
- Emma Wuthrich lit the lamp on Jan. 11 in the 4-3 win over Providence.
NEED A GOAL? CALL ON COMPHER
- Jesse Compher continued her stellar sophomore season this past weekend with three assists in the sweep of Providence.
- No other player in the country has more assists than Compher, who recorded her 25th helper on Saturday in the 4-2 win.
- She also tallied two assists in the 5-3 win on Friday, her 12th multi-point game of the season.
- That is tied for second most among all NCAA players.
- Only five skaters have more multi-assist games than Compher, who recorded her fifth such effort at PC.
MORE ON COMPHER'S BIG YEAR
- Compher is second in the country and first in Hockey East with 37 points (12g, 25a).
- She is also first in the conference in points per game (1.68) and assists per game (1.14).
- Those averages rank fourth and second, respectively, in the nation.
- No player has recorded an assist in more games (18) this season than Compher.
DAVIS DYNAMITE FOR TERRIERS
- Redshirt junior Sammy Davis tallied two goals a minute apart in the first period of the Terriers' 5-3 win at Providence on Friday.
- She enters the weekend tied for third in the league and eighth in the nation with 14 goals.
- Davis is also tied for fourth in the league with a career-high 27 points.
- She is one of three players in the league and 10 skaters in the NCAA with at least 10 multi-point efforts.
QUITE THE DYNAMIC DUO
- Sophomore Jesse Compher and redshirt junior Sammy Davis are the highest-scoring pair of teammates in Hockey East, having combined for 64 points.
- Compher and Davis rank second among NCAA duos, behind only a trio of Clarkson skaters.
