Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Strong Second Period Pushes BU Past Holy Cross, 4-1

WORCESTER, Mass. - Four different Terriers found the back of the net to help lead the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday night at the Hart Center.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes, but BU (12-6-5, 9-5-4 WHEA) scored three goals in the second period, including senior Mary Grace Kelley's game-winner, to take control of the contest. Freshman Alex Allan notched her first goal of the year while classmate Courney Correia and sophomore Jesse Compher also lit the lamp. Senior Connor Galway matched her career high with two assists. Sophomore Rachel Allen added her first assist of the season while junior Abby Cook, freshman Kaleigh Donnelly and sophomore Kristina Schuler each collected an assist.

Freshman goaltender Kate Stuart made 15 saves and held Holy Cross (1-20-3, 1-16-1 WHEA) scoreless at even strength.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Compher opened the scoring at 16:24 of the first period with a power-play strike. After Donnelly deflected a shot from Cook, Compher collected the loose puck, curled to the slot and fired the puck past Jada Brenon (28 saves) for her 13th goal of the season.
  • Holy Cross answered with 1:09 to play in the frame thanks to a 4-on-3 goal.
  • Kelley regained the lead for BU at 4:34 of the second stanza. Allen did well to protect the puck along the half-wall before dishing it to Galway at the left point. Kelley stationed herself in front of the net and deftly deflected the puck past Brenon for her first goal of the season.
  • Allan's first collegiate goal made it 3-1 just over four minutes later. She gathered a loose puck at center ice and sent a shot towards Brenon's cage. The puck took a funny hop and bounced past Brenon and into the back of the net.
  • Correia extended the lead to 4-1 with 27.4 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Galway cycled the puck down low for Correia, who then skated out of the corner and to the front of the net before sliding the puck inside the right post.
  • BU limited the Crusaders to just three shots on goal over the final 20 minutes.

GAME NOTES

  • Galway gathered two assists for the second time in her collegiate career and the first time since the Terriers' 3-0 win over Vermont on Nov. 16.
