Terriers Defeat Maine, 3-1

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly notched the game-winning goal and added an assist to help lead the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory at Maine on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

BU (3-1-1, 2-1-1 HEAW) earned its second straight win thanks to goals by Donnelly, junior Kristina Schuler and sophomore Courtney Correia. Junior Nara Elia secured two assists while seniors Breanna Scarpaci and Abby Cook also had one helper apiece.

Junior goaltender Corinne Schroeder was terrific, especially in the third period. She stopped all 16 shots she faced in the final 20 minutes as part of a 27-save performance.

The Terriers held Maine (2-3-1, 0-2-0 HEAW) to an 0-for-5 performance on the power play, with three of those kills coming in the third period.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Schuler opened the scoring just 1:06 into the proceedings. Freshman Julia Nearis dished the puck to Scarpaci, who fired a shot from the top of the Maine zone. Elia got a piece of the puck in front before it got to Schuler, who kicked the puck to her stick and quickly sent it past Carly Jackson (24 saves) for her first goal of the season.
  • Donnelly made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 8:04 of the second stanza. Elia won a battle in the corner and came out towards the crease before finding a wide-open Donnelly at the left post for the sophomore's first goal of the campaign.
  • Maine answered 13 seconds later to cut its deficit to 2-1.
  • That's how the score stood until Correia clinched the two points with 1:15 remaining in regulation. With the Maine net empty, Cook retrieved the puck from behind her own cage and sent it up the boards. Donnelly won a battle and chipped the puck out, where eventually it fell to Correia in the neutral zone. The sophomore skated to the blue line and fired the puck into the vacant cage for her first goal of the season.
