Elia Lifts Terriers to 3-2 Overtime Win at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Nara Elia scored with 1:06 remaining in overtime to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

BU (9-4-1, 4-4-1 HEAW) held a 2-1 lead after two periods, but Vermont (5-4-5, 2-4-3 HEAW) scored with 6:29 remaining in regulation. That set the stage for Eiia's heroics.

Senior Deziray De Sousa began the sequence by shielding an attacker from the puck at winning her own blue line and getting the puck to junior Kristina Schuler. Schuler skated in 1-on-2 and got a shot away that Natalie Ferenc (24 saves) denied. Elia, who trailed the play, jumped on the rebound and scored her fourth goal of the season to give BU the win.

Freshman Nadia Mattivi scored her first collegiate goal and junior Jesse Compher added a shorthanded tally as part of the victory. De Sousa and Schuler finished the game with two assists apiece, as they both assisted on Mattivi's milestone marker. Senior Abby Cook and redshirt senior Sammy Davis had the helpers on Compher's strike.

Sophomore goaltender Kate Stuart was terrific on Saturday. She made 35 saves, including three in overtime and 14 in a third period that included three Vermont power plays during which Stuart stopped seven shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mattivi gave BU a 1-0 lead with her power-play strike at 16:44 of the first frame. A Vermont defender blocked Mattivi's first attempt, but Schuler recovered the puck and quickly gave it right back to Mattivi for a one-timer that beat Ferenc.
  • Compher extended the Terriers' lead just 5:30 into the second stanza with her second shorthanded goal in as many games. Cook hammered the puck off the boards and it caromed off a Vermont skate and right to Davis, who began a 2-on-1 rush with Compher. Davis eventually teed up Compher for a one-timer that whizzed by Ferenc.
  • UVM got on the board at 11:53 of the period to cut its deficit to just one entering the final 20 minutes.
  • The Terriers killed off three straight penalties, including several minutes of 5-on-3 time, thanks to Stuart's sharp play, brave shot blocking and key faceoff wins in the defensive zone.
  • Elia then won the game at 3:54 of overtime.
GAME NOTES
  • This was the Terriers' first overtime victory since they won the Beanpot on Feb. 12, 2019.
  • BU last won a non-tournament overtime game on Dec. 10, 2016, when the Terriers knocked off No. 2 Minnesota, 6-5, at Walter Brown Arena.
  • Elia extended her point streak to five games (3g, 5a) and now has a point in eight of her last 10 tilts.
  • Schuler pushed her point streak to four games (4g, 3a).
  • Mattivi is the second Terrier rookie to find the back of the net this season. Classmate Julia Nearis leads the squad with seven markers.
  • Compher has tallied a shorthanded goal in each of the last two games and has a point in three of her first five games (4g, 1a).
  • BU has scored on five of its last six power plays.
  • Vermont finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play.
