BOSTON –The Boston University men's lacrosse team, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Team IMPACT, named five-year-old Patrick Mahoney as the newest member of the program on Monday at a press conference held in the Case Center.

A native of Jamaica Plain, Patrick suffered from multiple brain tumors but is thankfully in remission. As a member of the men's lacrosse program, Patrick will be on the sideline at practices and games, serving not only as a teammate, but also as an inspiration.

Patrick comes to Boston University through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects kids facing serious and chronic illnesses to college athletic teams across the country. Through the generous support of sponsor Boston Private, children with chronic illnesses are drafted onto local college athletic teams and become an official member of the team to support the child's physical, social and emotional needs.

"It is great to give Patrick and his family a lift through this partnership with Team IMPACT after everything they have been through," said head men's lacrosse coach Ryan Polley. "Patrick is truly an inspiration, and we are so happy and lucky to have him as the newest member of our team. Our players and our coaching staff have really embraced him, and we're thrilled that Patrick is going to have 44 big brothers."

The men's lacrosse team is the second BU program to partner with Team IMPACT. The men's basketball team signed T'Andre Cephas Harris in November.
