Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 8 Terriers Fall to No. 6 BC, 5-1, in WHEA Semifinals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Abby Cook scored her eighth goal of the season, but the No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team suffered a 5-1 setback to No. 6 Boston College in a Hockey East semifinal contest on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.

Sophomore Jesse Compher and freshman Kaleigh Donnelly assisted on Cook's goal, which came during a second-period power play to cut the Eagles' lead to 3-1. BC (26-10-1) responded shortly after Cook's marker, however, en route to the victory.

BU finished its season with a 21-8-8 record, including four wins over ranked opponents. The Terriers played their best hockey during the second half of the season, as they went 13-3-3 in 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BC scored just 22 seconds into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Despite being outshot, 9-3, in the opening 20 minutes, the Terriers had several good chances to even the game, including a Davis chance from the left circle that Maddy McArthur turned aside.
  • Sophomore Corinne Schroeder (31 saves) kept the deficit at only one with a terrific save on a Caitrin Lonergan breakaway bid halfway through the frame.
  • BC capitalized on a dubious penalty to make it 2-0 3:57 into the second stanza before adding another power-play goal at 11:49 of the period.
  • Cook got a goal back for the Terriers at 14:27 of the second period with a power-play strike. Compher dished the puck to Cook at the top of the zone, and the Hockey East Second Team All-Star sent a wrist shot past McArthur.
  • The Eagles responded almost two minutes later to make it 4-1 after 40 minutes.
  • BC added a fifth goal early in the third period to complete the scoring.
GAME NOTES
  • Compher finished her sensational sophomore campaign with a program-record 44 assists.
  • A top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, Compher is the only Terrier to reach the 40-assist milestone in a single season.
  • After missing all of last season due to injury, redshirt junior Sammy Davis posted career highs in goals (25), assists (27) and points (52).
  • This was the Terriers' 11th Hockey East semifinal appearance in 14 seasons.
  • Picked to finish fifth in Hockey East at the beginning of the season, BU won 21 games for its seventh 20-win season in program history.
  • Next year's roster was responsible for 112 of the team's 118 goals this season.
