Women's Soccer Drops 2OT Heartbreaker to Michigan State, 2-1

BOSTON – Concluding the 13th annual Terrier Tailgate, the Boston university women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to Michigan State in its home opener Sunday night at Nickerson Field.

Taylor Kofton delivered the first Terrier goal of the season in the 48th minute, but the Spartans countered with the equalizer in the 85th minute to force extra time. Following a scoreless first period of overtime, Michigan State scored on a breakaway six minutes into the second frame of overtime to steal the win.

How It Happened
  • Amanda Fay came up with a diving save to keep the clean sheet 13 minutes into action, fending off the first shot of the game.
  • Kofton nearly delivered a strike of her own in the 19th minute, rocketing a one-timer from just outside the 18-yard box that Michigan's State's keeper elevated for the punch-out save.
  • The Spartans pressed with three shots off a corner kick in the 23rd minute, but the Terrier defense was able to withstand the pressure.
  • Kelly Park had the best look of the opening half, stroking a laser from 20 yards out that pounded off the crossbar two minutes before the break.
  • BU finally broke through in the 48th minute as Kofton laced a shot that ricocheted off a Spartan defender and snuck inside the back left post.
  • Michigan State pressed with eight shots over the final 20 minutes of action, eventually knotting the score in the 85th minute, as Paige Webber flicked in a header off a corner kick.
  • Caitlin DiSarcina and Kofton opened up the second overtime with back-to-back shots, with DiSarcina's landing on frame, but right in the hand's of the Spartan keeper.
  • Working on the counter, Michigan State's Gia Wahlberg chased down a serve from midfield, catching up with the ball just inside the 18-yard box and poked it into the back of the net to end the game.
Game Notes
  • Kofton's goal marked the second straight year the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year netted BU's first goal of the ensuing season.

  • BU recorded the first seven shots of the second half before Michigan State tallied nine of the final 12 shots of the frame.
  • Kofton and Anna Heilferty led the Terriers with three shots each, while Kofton was responsible for 2 of BU's five shots on goal on the night.
  • Sunday was the first time BU need overtime in its home opener since 2015, when it topped Hofstra 2-1 in extra time.
