Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 8 Terriers Edged by Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Abby Cook scored an extra-attacker goal with 2:05 remaining in regulation, but the eighth-ranked Boston University women's ice hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to Providence on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

Providence (11-8-2, 8-6-0 HEAW) staked itself a 2-0 lead, but BU (13-5-2, 8-5-2 HEAW) got within a goal when sophomore Emma Wuthrich and junior Nara Elia combined to set up Cook's sixth goal of the season. The Terriers continued to press for an equalizer during the final two minutes, but to no avail.

Junior Corinne Schroeder stopped 26 shots, including all 13 she faced in the third period, and allowed just one even-strength goal. The loss snapped the Terriers' seven-game unbeaten streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Providence capitalized on a 5-on-3 opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the first period.
  • The Friars extended their advantage to 2-0 at 13:19 of the second stanza.
  • BU had plenty of chances in the middle frame to get on the board, with the best one coming when sophomore Courtney Correia found classmate Mackenna Parker alone at the right post. Sandra Abstreiter (29 saves) robbed Parker of the goal, however, to keep the Terriers scoreless through 40 minutes.
  • The Terriers got their lone power-play opportunity with just over six minutes remaining in regulation and pulled Schroeder in favor of an extra attacker for a portion of the power play, but despite two good looks by Elia and Wuthrich, they were unable to score
  • Both Elia and Wuthrich proved instrumental on the lone BU goal of the contest. With Schroeder once again out of the net and a delayed penalty on the Friars, Elia kept the play alive behind the net and the puck found its way to Wuthrich. The sophomore quickly fed Cook at the top of the zone, and Cook's shot took a deflection off a Providence stick and into the back of the net.
  • With Schroeder once again on the bench, BU had a couple chances during the ensuing power play but was unable to find a second goal. After a Terrier penalty with 45.7 seconds to go, BU pulled Schroeder again but eventually ran out of time.
GAME NOTES
  • Junior Jesse Compher and redshirt senior Sammy Davis both had their respective seven-game point streaks snapped.
  • Cook has tallied four points (2g, 2a) over the last four fixtures.
  • Elia has notched a point in three of the last four tilts.
