No. 8 BU to Begin Home-and-Home Series with Holy Cross Friday Night

The No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team will begin a home-and-home series with Holy Cross on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. The teams will then skate in Worcester on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Friday's game is the Terriers' annual Skating Strides against Breast Cancer game. All ticket proceeds will benefit the Hockey East Skating Strides initiative. Fans can also participate in a chuck-a-puck contest during the second intermission.

In addition, Friday will be another Turnpike Trophy contest between BU and Holy Cross. The Terriers lead the Crusaders, 3-2, in the annual all-sport competition. Each game this weekend will count as a point towards the overall standings.
 

NEED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SCHEDULE

  • BU only has one more scheduled league game against a team ahead of the Terriers in the Hockey East standings.
  • In fact, the Terriers' next four games are against the bottom two teams in the league.
  • The Terriers enter the weekend in third, one point ahead of UConn and only one point behind Boston College.
  • More importantly, the Terriers have two games in hand on the Eagles.
  • UConn has a game in hand on BU, though the two teams do meet for a weekend series at Walter Brown to close the regular season.
  • Northeastern is first with 28 points.

WELCOMING AN OLD FRIEND

  • For the first time, former Terrier assistant coach Katie Lachapelle will be a head coach against BU.
  • Lachapelle is in her third season at Holy Cross and her first as the Crusaders' bench boss.
  • Lachapelle helped BU win five Hockey East titles and reach two national title games in her nine seasons with the Terriers.

LAST TIME AGAINST HOLY CROSS

  • The Terriers completed a season sweep of the Crusaders with a 7-1 triumph on Feb. 9, 2019, at Walter Brown Arena.
  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead at 4:04 of the second stanza, but the Terriers tallied three goals in a span of 1:18 to grab a 3-1 lead.
  • Fourteen different Terriers notched a point.
  • Courtney Correia, Sammy Davis and Kristina Schuler each scored twice while Jesse Compher added a goal and an assist.
  • Emma Wuthrich led the Terriers with a career-high two assists.
  • Corinne Schroeder made 16 saves to seal the victory.

HISTORY WITH HOLY CROSS

  • BU won all three meetings with Holy Cross last year, which was the Crusaders' first season in Hockey East.
  • The Terriers outscored the Crusaders, 18-3, in those three tilts.

  • Courtney Correia leads BU with six points against Holy Cross thanks to a team-high two goals.
  • Jesse Compher has notched five points (2g, 3a), followed by Sammy Davis (3g, 1a) and Kaleigh Donnelly (4a) with four points apiece.
  • Kristina Schuler has tallied two goals and one assist against the Crusaders.
  • Eight different Terriers have two points against Holy Cross.
  • Every BU skater that played all three games against the Crusaders last year tallied a point.
  • Corinne Schroeder went 2-0-0 with a .944 save percentage and a 1.20 goals-against average.
  • Kate Stuart made 15 saves in her one start against Holy Cross.

  • Senior Rachel Moore leads the team in goals (3), assists (7) and points (10).
  • Freshman Mary Edmonds also has three goals this year.
  • Sophomore goaltender Jada Brendon has recorded two shutouts.
  • She owns a .917 save percentage and a 3.09 goals-against average.
  • Brenon started one of the two games she played against BU last year, allowing six goals and making 48 saves.

DUROCHER NEARING A MILESTONE

  • Head coach Brian Durocher is now just one win away from 300 as the Terriers' bench boss.
  • He has been at the helm of the program for all 15 seasons.
  • Combined with his brief stint as the head coach of Colgate's men's team, Durocher has logged 311 victories.

WHERE DOES DUROCHER RANK?

  • BU head coach Brian Durocher ranks 10th all-time among active head coaches with 299 wins and will become the 15th National Collegiate head coach to reach that milestone 
  • Durocher will be the 11th National Collegiate head coach to win 300 games at one institution and currently ranks seventh among coaches still active at that school.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

  • Five different skaters scored the Terriers' five goals this past weekend against Providence.
  • In addition, six different Terriers tallied a point over the weekend.
  • In the last five games, nine different Terriers have lit the lamp and 16 different BU skaters have notched at least one point.

ELECTRIC ELIA

  • Junior Nara Elia notched her fifth game-winning goal of the season on Saturday when she broke a 1-1 tie in the Terriers' 4-1 triumph over Providence.
  • She ranks second in the NCAA and the conference in that category.
  • Sarah Lefort ('16) owns the single-season program record for game-winning goals with eight in 2013-14; she also scored seven winners as a freshman in 2012-13.
  • Elia has made a big impact for the Terriers over their last four games.
  • She has tallied the Terriers' last two game-winners and has a point in three of her last four fixtures.
  • Elia was the only Terrier to notch a point in each game against Providence this past weekend.
  • She enters this weekend with 17 points thanks to six goals and a career-high 11 assists.
  • Elia needs two more points to eclipse last year's career best of 18 points.

DAVIS FINDING HER STRIDE

  • Redshirt senior Sammy Davis enters the weekend having notched a point in eight of her last nine games.
  • Davis had her seven-game point streak snapped on Friday but bounced back by scoring an unassisted goal to give BU a 1-0 lead on Saturday.
  • She has tallied five goals and seven assists for 12 points over the last nine contests.
  • Davis has notched a point in 13 of the last 16 games; BU is 11-1-1 in those 13 tilts and 0-3-0 in the two games in which she has not found the score sheet.
  • Davis leads the Terriers with 24 points and 15 assists and is tied for the team lead with nine goals.

MATTIVI MAKES HER MARK

  • Freshman Nadia Mattivi notched her second goal in the last three games when she scored in Saturday's 4-1 win over Providence.
  • Mattivi also lit the lamp in a 3-3 tie with Maine on Jan. 5.
  • Mattivi has secured five points over the last six games and seven points (3g, 4a) since Nov. 19.
  • That seven points since mid-November ranks third among all rookie defenders.
  • Mattivi enters this weekend with three goals and five assists for eight points.

SCHROEDER HAS BEEN SENSATIONAL

  • Junior goaltender Corinne Schroeder ranks third in the NCAA with a .943 save percentage and fifth in the country with a 1.50 goals-against average. 
  • Schroeder has recorded two shutouts this season and has been nearly unbeatable on the road, sporting a .954 save percentage and seven wins away from Walter Brown Arena.
  • She has allowed three goals just twice this year and has yet to allow more than two even-strength goals this season.

STUART STRONG, TOO

  • Sophomore Kate Stuart has been sharp in her five starts this year.
  • She is 4-1-0 with a .940 save percentage and a 1.97 goals-against average.
  • In her four wins she has posted a .950 save percentage and a 1.46 goals-against average.
  • Stuart made 27 saves in her last start, a 3-2 OT win over Maine on Jan. 4.

DEFENSE IS STINGY

  • BU has allowed just 1.67 goals per game, which is fifth-best in the country  and second-best in the conference.
  • At even strength (not including empty-netters), BU gives up just 1.09 goals per game.
