No. 8 Terriers to Host Maine for Weekend Series

The No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team will open the new year this weekend when the Terriers welcome Maine to Walter Brown Arena for a weekend series. Puck drop on Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for 3 p.m.

LAST TIME AGAINST MAINE

  • The Terriers earned a 3-1 win at Maine on Oct. 20.
  • Junior Kristina Schuler gave BU a 1-0 lead just 1:06 into the contest while sophomores Kaleigh Donnelly and Courtney Correia also lit the lamp.
  • Donnelly assisted on Correia's empty-netter to complete a two-point day.
  • Junior Nara Elia assisted on the first two goals while seniors Abby Cook and Breanna Scarpaci added one assist apiece.
  • Junior Corinne Schroeder made 27 saves and stopped all 16 shots she faced in the third period to earn the win.

HISTORY WITH MAINE

  • BU is 29-15-2 all-time against Maine, including a 13-6-0 record at Walter Brown Arena and a 14-6-1 record in Boston.
  • The teams have split the last four meetings, including a 3-1 BU win on Oct. 20 in Maine.
  • The Black Bears' last five wins have all been by one goal.

SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS

  • Maine last played on Dec. 14 when it earned a 5-1 win over Franklin Pierce.
  • The Black Bears also got swept at home by Vermont on Dec. 6 and 7.
  • Senior Tereza Vanisova leads the team with 11 goals, 12 assists and 23 points.
  • Sophomores Liga Miljone (5g, 10a) and Ali Beltz (4g, 11a) each have 15 points.
  • Six different Black Bears have registered at least 10 points.
  • Senior Carly Jackson has started 12 of the 14 games in which she has appeared, including the Terriers' 3-1 win at Maine on Oct. 20.
  • Jackson owns a 5-6-1 record with a .916 save percentage and a 2.18 goals-against average.
  • Junior Loryn Porter is 3-3-1 in seven starts with a .919 save percentage and a 2.22 goals-against average.

STAYING CLOSE TO HOME

  • The Terriers will play at least one home game every week during the second semester.
  • The only time they play two straight road games next semester is when they travel to Merrimack (Jan. 25) and Northeastern (Jan. 28).

SCHROEDER SIMPLY SENSATIONAL

  • Junior Corinne Schroeder is one of the best goaltenders in the country.
  • She ranks third in the nation with a .949 save percentage and is fifth in the NCAA with a 1.39 goals-against average.
  • During the Terriers' current five-game win streak, Schroeder is 4-0-0 with a .961 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average; both those marks rank second in the nation.
  • Schroeder has not allowed an even-strength goal in her last 179:54 of work and has given up just two 5-on-5 markers in her last four starts.

COMPHER COLLECTS 100TH POINT

  • Junior Jesse Compher collected her 100th career point with an assist on Abby Cook's game-winning goal at Boston College on Dec. 7.
  • Compher is the 14th Terrier in program history to reach the 100-point milestone. 
  • She now has 33 goals and 67 assists in just 82 games. 
  • Compher joins Sammy Davis in the prestigious group of 100-point scorers, as Davis is eighth all-time with 121 career points (56g, 65a).

JUST HOW GOOD HAS JESSE BEEN?

  • Since returning to the Terrier lineup on Nov. 9, Compher is tied for third in the conference and 10th in the nation with 13 points (7g, 6a).
  • She also leads the country in power-play (4) and shorthanded (2) goals.
  • Compher enters this weekend on a five-game point streak (6g, 6a) and has factored on three of the Terriers' last five game-winning goals.
  • Nobody in the country has more points (12) in their last five games than Compher. 

POWER SURGE

  • The Terriers have scored an NCAA-best 11 power-play goals during their five-game win streak, posting a nation-leading 57.9% success rate.
  • BU is second overall on the power play at 30.0%.
  • Since Nov. 1, the Terriers have converted on 35.0% of their power-play chances, which is best in Division I.
  • Freshman Julia Nearis leads the team and is tied for fourth in the NCAA with five power-play goals.

KILLING 'EM SOFTLY

  • BU has killed off 14 of the last 15 power-play chances it has faced.
  • The Terriers were a perfect 7-of-7 on the penalty kill in their weekend sweep at Vermont on Nov. 23 and 24.
  • They then held Boston College to just one power-play goal in eight attempts.
  • During their five-game win streak, BU has allowed just two power-play goals in 20 opportunities.
  • BU has also scored three shorthanded goals in that span.
  • The Terriers now rank 10th in the NCAA on the penalty kill at 87.7%.
  • BU is one of five schools to boast a top-10 power play as well as a top-10 penalty kill.

OFF TO FAST STARTS

  • The Terriers have scored the opening goal in 15 of its 17 games this year.
  • Only Wisconsin has tallied the first goal more often than BU, and only Cornell (13-of-13) has scored the first goal in a higher percentage of its games than the Terriers (88.2%)
  • BU is 7-0-0 when leading after the first period.
  • Freshman Julia Nearis and junior Kristina Schuler have each opened the scoring on four different occasions, which is tied for third in the NCAA.
  • BU has also been good defensively to start, as it has allowed just six first-period goals; its average of 0.35 goals against in the opening 20 minutes is fifth in the nation.

DEFENSE IS STINGY

  • BU has allowed just 1.59 goals per game, which is fifth-best in the country this season.
  • At even strength (not including empty-netters), BU gives up just 1.00 goal per game.

DUROCHER NEARING A MILESTONE

  • Head coach Brian Durocher is now three wins away from 300 as the Terriers' bench boss.
  • He has been at the helm of the program for all 15 seasons.
  • Combined with his brief stint as the head coach of Colgate's men's team, Durocher has logged 309 victories.

STUART STRONG IN NET

  • Sophomore Kate Stuart has been sharp for the Terriers in four starts this season.
  • Stuart is 3-1-0 with a .942 save percentage and a 1.98 goals-against average.
  • In her three wins, Stuart has posted a .956 save percentage and a 1.31 GAA.
  • She has made at least 30 saves three times, including 35 in her last start, a 3-2 triumph at Vermont on Nov. 23.
  • Stuart recorded a career-best 43 saves at New Hampshire on Oct. 12.

DAVIS FINDING HER STRIDE

  • Redshirt senior Sammy Davis enters the weekend on a five-game point streak.
  • She has tallied three goals and five assists for eight points in that span.
  • Davis has notched a point in 10 of the last 12 games; BU is 9-1-0 in those 10 tilts and 0-2-0 in the two games in which she has not found the score sheet.
  • Davis leads the Terriers with 20 points and 13 assists.

COUPLE OF CAREER NIGHTS FOR D-PAIR

  • Freshman Nadia Mattivi and senior Alexandra Calderone both had career nights in the Terriers' 6-0 win against BC on Dec. 6.
  • Playing on the same defensive pairing, both players tallied a career-best two assists in the victory.
  • Mattivi assisted on the game-winning goal as part of her two-point performance and now has five points (1g, 4a) this season.
  • Four of Mattivi's five points, a goal and three assists, have come during the Terriers' five-game win streak.
  • Calderone's helpers were the first two points of her campaign.

DONNELLY DELIVERS

  • Sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly enters the weekend on a three-game point streak.
  • She has notched four assists in that span, including the primary helper on both BU goals in a 2-1 win at BC on Dec. 6.
  • Donnelly has tallied three goals and nine assists for 12 points this year.
  • She tallied one goal and 16 assists for 17 points as a rookie last year.

NOW WE'RE COOKING

  • Senior defender Abby Cook has tallied seven points (2g, 5a) in the last four games.
  • She scored the game-winning goal at BC on Dec. 6, her second game-winning marker in the last three tilts.
  • Cook has scored three winners this year and has assisted three others.
  • No other defender has notched more game-winning goals or had a point on more winners than Cook.
  • Cook is sixth among Hockey East blue liners with 15 points (5g, 10a).
