Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Schroeder Backstops No. 9 BU to 1-0 Win at New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Corinne Schroeder stopped all 33 shots she faced to lead the ninth-ranked Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 victory at New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Whittemore Center.

Schroeder's fourth shutout of the season ensured that sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly's first-period goal stood as the game-winner, as BU (21-6-4, 15-6-3 HEAW) extended its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). Twelve of Schroeder's 33 stops came during UNH (15-13-4, 11-11-3 HEAW) power plays, as she and the Terriers held the Wildcats to an 0-for-6 mark with a player advantage.

Donnelly's fourth goal of the season came at the 10:08 mark of the first frame during a Terrier power play. Redshirt senior Sammy Davis and junior Nara Elia earned the assists on the marker.

The Terriers' win, coupled with losses by Providence and UConn, clinched home-ice advantage for BU in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Donnelly opened the scoring when she knocked home the rebound that came from a Davis shot.
  • Schroeder made her best save of the game earlier in the period when she stood tall to deny a Wildcat attacker on a 2-on-1 opportunity.
  • The Terrier netminder nearly scored a goal on a wild sequence in the second period. With a delayed penalty on BU, UNH pulled goaltender Ava Boutilier (29 saves). A Wildcat player collected the puck in the offensive zone and tried to pass it back to a teammate, but it went all the way to the other end of the rink and towards the vacant cage. A New Hampshire defender raced back and corralled the puck as it entered the crease.
  • UNH had a 5-on-3 power play for 32 seconds in the middle stanza but Schroeder and the Terriers were equal to the task and kept their opponents from evening the score.
  • The Wildcats killed a late penalty and pulled Boutilier with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but BU held off the late rally to secure the triumph.
GAME NOTES
  • Schroeder has two shutouts in her last three starts, both of which were 33-save efforts.
  • She blanked Boston College, 4-0, in the Beanpot semifinals on Feb. 4.
  • This was also Schroeder's second 1-0 triumph of the season.
  • She made 38 stops in a 1-0 win at UConn on Oct. 18.
  • Davis pushed her point streak to five games (4g, 3a) with her assist.
  • She has factored on each of the Terriers' last three game-winning goals.
