No. 8 Terriers Skate Past Holy Cross, 5-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - Redshirt senior Sammy Davis tallied two goals and both junior Jesse Compher and senior Abby Cook collected three points to help lead the No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 win at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Hart Center.

BU (20-6-3, 14-6-3 HEAW) secured its eighth 20-win season in 15 seasons at the Division I level thanks in part to three goals in a span of 3:04 late in the first period. The Terriers also claimed another point from Holy Cross (3-21-5, 3-18-2 HEAW) in the Turnpike Trophy, an annual all-sport competition between the two schools.

Davis scored two of the Terriers' three power-play goals on the afternoon. Cook assisted on all three power-play markers, including Compher's 10th goal of the season that began the Terriers' first-period rally. Freshman Nadia Mattivi and sophomore Courtney Correia also found the back of the net. Freshman Haylee Blinkhorn, sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly, junior Kristina Schuler and senior Deziray De Sousa all added one assist apiece. Sophomore Kate Stuart made 17 assists to improve to 7-1-1 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holy Cross struck first just 1:10 into the proceedings to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Compher responded on the Terriers' second power play of the contest when she roofed a shot past Jada Brenon (36 saves).
  • Mattivi made it 2-0 just 13 seconds later with her fifth goal of the campaign. After De Sousa gained the Holy Cross blue line, she dished the puck to Schuler, who then gave it to Mattivi at the top of the zone. Mattivi threw a shot on goal that had eyes for the back of the net.
  • Davis then extended the lead to 3-1 with another power-play marker thanks to a terrific slap shot from the right circle.
  • She then scored her second goal of the game on a nearly identical play, as she stood in the right circle and one-timed a Cook pass off the back bar of the cage at 4:55 of the second stanza.
  • The Crusaders cut the lead to 4-2 at 11:46 of the frame, but Correia regained the Terriers' three-goal edge less than two minutes later. She made a nifty move at the blue line to get past a defender and eventually slid a pass to Blinkhorn, whose redirection attempt was saved by Brenon. Blinkhorn stayed with the play, however, and retrieved the puck below the goal line before passing it to Correia for a one-timer into a vacant left side of the net.
  • Stuart made a sensational glove save in the third period to keep the Crusaders from getting back into the contest.
