November 22, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON - Seniors Matt Hilburn and Timmy Ley of the Boston University men's lacrosse team have been named captains for the 2022 season, head coach Ryan Polley announced on Monday.
"I'm really excited that Matt and Timmy were voted by their teammates as this year's captains," Polley said. "All of our upperclassmen, particularly our seniors, have been outstanding this fall in putting an emphasis on our culture, but it's become quite clear that the leaders of our senior class are Timmy and Matt."
This will be Hilburn's second year as a captain, as he was part of the 2021 leadership group as a junior, while Ley will be serving as a captain for the first time.
"I was really impressed with the way Matt asserted himself as a team leader under really challenging circumstances last year, leading by example," Polley said. "This year he has continued to lead by example, but he has found his voice and is holding his teammates accountable. Similarly, Timmy did a great job last spring in what was a hard year for him due to his injury. Despite that, he did a terrific job leading and staying involved with the team. This year he continues to be a fantastic leader and I expect a great year from Timmy."
Hilburn started all 11 games for the Terriers last season, scoring three goals and recording a career-best seven assists. He put together a seven-game point streak as part of his strong campaign. In 33 career games, Hilburn has totaled 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points.
"It is one of the greatest honors of my athletic career to be selected to represent the team as captain alongside Timmy," Hilburn said. "This team is committed to getting this program to the next level, and I am grateful and excited to lead them there."
Ley has been tremendous on the offensive end for the Terriers throughout his three years at BU. In just seven games last season, he paced the Terriers with 27 goals and was third on the squad with 34 points. He enters 2022 with a 22-game goal scoring streak and has notched 69 goals and 18 assists for 87 points through 30 career games.
"It is such an honor to be voted captain of the Boston University lacrosse team," Ley said. "I give all credit to my teammates, who work extremely hard every day to represent BU Lacrosse. I look forward to a year of excellence on the field and in the classroom."
