BOSTON - Following a regular season that saw the No. 9/10 Boston University men's ice hockey team finish second in the Hockey East standings, the Terriers will get their postseason started on Sunday (March 14) when they host seventh-seeded UMass Lowell in the Hockey East quarterfinal round. Game time at Walter Brown Arena is set for 1 p.m.
Sunday's game will be televised on NESN+ and will be available to all on SportsLive.
BU (10-3-1) and UMass Lowell (8-8-1) just played in the regular-season finale last Saturday as the Terriers emerged with a shootout win following a 3-3 draw. The River Hawks downed Vermont, 5-3, in the first round of the Hockey East tournament on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals.
This is the third straight year that the Terriers and River Hawks are matched up in the quarterfinal round. BU won a best-of-three series in 2019 that went the distance and the teams were scheduled to meet again at Tsongas Center for the 2020 quarterfinals before the tournament was canceled.
Senior David Farrance (5g, 11a) was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star for the second straight year and he enters the postseason tied with sophomore Jay O'Brien (8g, 8a) for the team's point lead with 16 apiece. Freshman Luke Tuch, a Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, is third on the team with 10 points, including six goals.
Freshman goaltender Drew Commesso joined Tuch on the All-Rookie Team and he currently sports a .923 save percentage and a 2.75 goals-against average.
For UMass Lowell, junior Reid Stefanson (4g, 9a) and sophomore Andre Lee (6g, 7a) have 13 points apiece while senior Charlie Levesque (6g, 5a) and sophomore Carl Berglund (3g, 8a) have chipped in 11 points each. The balanced attack has seven players with at least four goals and no one with more than six.
Freshman Henry Welsch and junior Owen Savory have split time in goal for the River Hawks with Welsch holding an edge in both goals-against average (2.77 - 3.35) and save percentage (.895 - .846).
Sunday's winner will advance to the semifinal round, which will take place on St. Patrick's Day.
