ALBANY, N.Y. - Making its fifth NCAA appearance in the past six tournaments, the Boston University men's hockey team is matched up against NCHC runner-up St. Cloud State in the Northeast Regional. They will meet on Saturday (March 27) at 1 p.m. at the Times Union Arena in Albany, N.Y. The game, which starts at 1 p.m., will be televised on ESPNews and for Canadian viewers, it will be available on TSN.ca and the TSN app.
The teams have met only once before and it was the exact same scenario as the Terriers earned a 5-3 win over the Huskies in the opening round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament in Albany.
BU last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2018 and it has reached the regional final in three of its past four appearances.
St. Cloud State finished second in the NCHC standings before advancing to the league title game, where they fell to North Dakota, 5-3. The Huskies have now qualified for seven of the past eight NCAA Tournaments.
St. Cloud is led offensively by one of the top rookies in the nation as Veeti Miettinen has a team-best 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. Miettinen is followed by a trio of players with 20 points - sophomores Jami Krannila (10g, 10a) and Zach Okabe (6g, 14a) and junior Nick Perbix (6g, 14a). The Huskies' balanced attack has eight players with six goals or more with senior Easton Brodzinski leading the way with 11 tallies.
Senior David Hrenak has started in goal for 23 of the team's 27 games this season and he sports a .906 save percentage and a 2.60 goals-against average.
BU is making its 37th NCAA tournament appearance (22 in last 31 tournaments), which ranks third all-time (Minnesota and Michigan have 38).
The Terriers enter Saturday's game with an all-time record of 43-37-0 (.538) in NCAA tournament play. The 43 wins represent the fifth-highest total in tournament history. The only programs with more victories are Minnesota (55), Michigan (53), North Dakota (52) and Boston College (49).
The Terriers won the title in 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995 and 2009. They finished second six times (1950, 1967, 1991, 1994, 1997 and 2015), third five times (1951, 1960, 1974, 1975 and 1977) and fourth three times (1953, 1966 and 1976).
This is the first time since 2016 that BU has been a number three seed.
For the second time in as many years senior defenseman David Farrance has been named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in men's college hockey. Farrance joins Chris Drury as the only Terriers to repeat as a Hobey Baker top-10 finalist.
Farrance has 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points, which is tied for first on the team with sophomore Jay O'Brien who has a team-best eight goals to go along with eight assists.
