BOSTON – After erasing two one-goal deficits thanks to goals from junior
Andi Calderone and senior
Julia Nearis, the Boston University women's ice hockey team fell to New Hampshire in overtime, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon att Walter Brown Arena.
Calderone's goal was the first of her career, making her the third upperclassman this season to score her first career goal. She backhanded the puck into the net with help from sophomore
Liv Haag and Nearis to tie things up 1-1 in the second period. Nearis made it a two-point night when she found the back of the net off assists from junior
Lacey Martin and senior
Nadia Mattivi to make the score 2-2 and force overtime.
Sophomore goaltender
Callie Shanahan stopped 39 shots for the third-highest save total of her career.
BU now sits at 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNH opened the scoring just nine seconds into the game as Kira Juodikis corralled the puck off the opening faceoff and skated in before following up a rebound off her own shot to quickly give the visitors the lead.
- That would be the only goal of the opening period, which included two power-play chances for UNH and one for the Terriers.
- The Terriers tied the game at 1-1 just 3:43 into the second period when Calderone took a cross-crease pass from Haag and backhanded it past UNH netminder Ava Boutilier.
- BU found itself trailing soon again, however, as a penalty 17 seconds after the Calderone goal put the Wildcats on a power play that they would quickly score on.
- Emily Pinto put the visitors up 2-1 on a power-play tally just 29 seconds after BU got on the board off assists by Juodikis and Kyla Bent.
- Nearis drew the Terriers even once again when she finished off a perfectly executed give-and-go with Martin at 18:25 of the second.
- Neither team scored in the third period but the Terriers did allow a power-play opportunity for the visitors with 6:14 left in regulation.
- BU dominated possession in overtime but the Wildcats took advantage of the first chance they had in the extra session.
- From behind the net, Pinto found Juodikis streaking through the left circle and Juodikis found the back of the net 3:14 into overtime.
