No. 8/7 BU Set to Host No. 9 Harvard at Sold-Out Walter Brown Friday Night on ESPN2

The No. 8/7 Boston University men's ice hockey team will close out the calendar year with a top-10 tilt against No. 9 Harvard on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. The sold-out contest will be nationally televised live on ESPN2, with an audio-only broadcast located here.
Friday's top-10 tilt between the two Beanpot rivals will be the first regular-season men's ice hockey contest with fans at Walter Brown Arena since Jan. 2, 2005, when BU hosted Minnesota before opening Agganis Arena the next night.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- This will be the Terriers' second straight and sixth overall game against a top-10 foe this season.
- BU is 4-1-0 against top-10 opponents this season, including a 3-2 victory over then-No. 8 UConn on Dec. 11 to close out the first semester.
- BU and Harvard are the closest Division I hockey schools - from rink to rink - in the country, just 1.9 miles apart.
- Senior Matt Brown leads BU in goals (8), assists (15) and points (23) after a five-point weekend prior to the break, which included a one-goal, three-assist effort at BC on Dec. 9.
- Brown ranks fourth nationally and first in Hockey East with an average of 1.44 points per game.
- The Terriers will be without freshman defender Lane Hutson, who is representing the United States at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.
- Hutson is second on the squad in goals (7), assists (11) and points (18).
- Senior captain Domenick Fensore enters Friday on a six-game point streak.
- Fensore, who played in his 100th career game as a Terrier on Dec. 9, has tallied nine points (5g, 4a) in those six contests.
- The Terriers average 3.94 goals per game, which is tops in Hockey East and third-most in the NCAA.
- BU also averages 36.3 shots on goal per game, which ranks second in the country and first in Hockey East.
SERIES HISTORY
- BU and Harvard are the closest Division I hockey schools - from rink to rink - in the country, just 1.9 miles apart.
- BU-Northeastern is second at 2.1 miles while Brown-Providence is third at 2.6.
- The Terriers and Crimson have played 159 times since the 1922-23 season and the Terriers hold an 82-70-7 (.538) advantage.
- BU has won six of the past eight meetings (6-2-1) after dropping five straight to the Crimson.
- That includes a 4-3 win in last year's Beanpot semifinals at TD Garden.
- The teams first met on Dec. 13, 1922, at Boston Arena, with Harvard winning, 2-0.
- BU is 7-6-1 against Harvard at Walter Brown Arena.
- This is the first top-10 matchup between BU and Harvard since the No. 4 Terriers and the No. 3 Crimson met in the 2017 Beanpot title game.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
- Harvard opened the season 6-0-0, but has since gone 1-2-1, including a 2-1 overtime win at Cornell and a 6-4 road loss to Colgate to end the first semester.
- That four-game stretch also includes a 4-4 tie and a 4-1 loss at then-No. 5 Michigan.
- Junior Sean Farrell leads Harvard with 18 points and is tied atop the team leaderboard in both goals (7) and assists (11).
- Farrell is second in the NCAA in points per game at 1.64.
- Senior Henry Thrun also has 11 assists while junior Alex Laferriere joins Farrell with seven goals this season.
- Harvard has the top penalty kill (90.9%) and the fifth-ranked power play (27.5%) in the country.
- Senior goaltender Mitchell Gibson is 5-1-1 in seven starts this season, posting a .930 save percentage and a 1.83 goals-against average.
- BU will begin 2023 out west when the Terriers take part in the Desert Hockey Classic hosted by Arizona State.
- The Terriers will open the tournament on Jan. 6 against Air Force before facing either Michigan Tech or the host Sun Devils the next day.
