Courtney Correia scored in the opening minute of play but the Boston University women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 contest to third-seeded UConn in the Hockey East quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies tied up the game later in the first before taking the lead on in the second on their lone power play opportunity of the game. A late empty-netter created the 3-1 final.
BU got a 23-save performance from freshman
Callie Shanahan and finishes its season with a record of 12-15-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Correia got things off to a great start when she took a pass off the left boards from sophomore Catherine Foulem and then followed up her own rebound for a tally inside the right post just 43 seconds into the contest.
- UConn was able to get an equalizer later in the first, taking advantage of a neutral-zone turnover to set up Jada Habisch in the right slot at 12:47.
- The Terriers had a power-play chance in each period, including one in the late stages of the first, but settled for a 1-1 draw heading into the first intermission.
- The go-ahead goal came on the Huskies' lone power-play chance of the afternoon as Viki Harkness poked in a rebound at the crease with assists from Morgan and Taylor Wabick at 7:52 of the middle frame.
- BU got back on the power play four minutes after UConn took the lead but the Husky penalty kill was up to the task, blocking everything the Terriers attempted.
- UConn limited BU's chances over the last half of regulation and added an empty-netter with 1:09 to play, sealing the win.
GAME NOTES
- UConn held a 26-16 shot advantage.
- The Huskies got a 15-save effort in goal from Megan Warrener.
- Sophomore Julia Shaunessy tied UConn's Taylor Wabick for the game high in blocked shots with four.
