Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Fall to Holy Cross in Overtime, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Clare O'Leary scored with two minutes left in regulation to send the game to overtime but the Boston University women's ice hockey team fell short, 2-1, at Holy Cross on Friday afternoon at Hart Center Rink after the Crusaders scored early in the extra session.

The game was scoreless until midway through the third period as Holy Cross used a power play to get on the board with 8:51 to play. The Terriers got a late power play of their own and pulled goaltender Andrea Brändli to gain a 6-on-4 advantage that produced O'Leary's game-tying tally.

Mary Edmonds provided the game-winner with her second goal of the game for the Crusaders just 23 seconds into overtime.

Brändli made 38 saves for the Terriers, who move to 7-15-0 on the year with a 6-12-0 Hockey East record. Holy Cross improves to 4-18-1 with a 3-14-0 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU held a 10-8 shot advantage in a back-and-forth opening period that did not produce many strong looks at either end.
  • The middle period was also competitive as each team recorded 10 shots in the stanza.
  • Holy Cross got the first power-play chance of the game at 11:30 of the second but Brändli stopped all three shots she faced during the two minutes to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Terriers finally drew a penalty at the 3:57 mark of the third but were unable to threaten on the player advantage.
  • The teams traded power-play goals late in the third beginning with Holy Cross as Edmonds pounced on a rebound in front and deposited the puck with a backhand at the right post at 11:09.
  • Freshman Sydney Healey drove to the right post and drew a Holy Cross hooking penalty with 2:13 to play.
  • BU needed just 13 seconds in the power play to muster an equalizer as senior captain Nadia Mattivi took a pass from Healey and skated towards the top of the slot before firing a shot that O'Leary tipped past Holy Cross netminder Madison Beck and in to make it a 1-1 contest.
  • Edmonds won it for the Crusaders on the first shot of overtime as she buried a cross-crease pass from Lane Lewis.

  • Beck made 28 saves to earn the win in goal.
  • The Crusaders outshot BU, 40-29, including a 21-9 margin in the third period.
