BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team picked up two points in Hockey East play, skating to a 2-2 draw with No. 13 Providence before winning the shootout, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
Â
BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from junior
Julia Shaunessy and senior
Julia Nearis. The Friars used power-play goals in both the second and third periods to draw even and force overtime.
Â
Nearis scored first in the shootout, which required a fourth round, where Martin converted the winner to give BU the extra point.
Â
Graduate student
Andrea Brändli made 40 saves for the Terriers while sophomore
Christina Vote assisted on both goals.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- BU put together one of its best first periods of the season, scoring twice within a span of just over three minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the the first intermission.
- A perfectly executed breakout led to the opening goal as junior Catherine Foulem moved the puck up to classmate Madison Cardaci, who one-touched it to Vote up the left side of the neutral zone.
- Vote then flipped the puck towards the slot, allowing Shaunessy to catch up to it while sneaking past two defenders before finding the back of the net 7:04 into the game.
- PC got the first power-play chance of the night but committed a penalty of its own in the closing seconds of its advantage and the ensuing BU power play produced a goal.
- After passing back and forth with senior Nadia Mattivi, Vote approached the slot and found Nearis open at the left dot, where the junior blasted in a one-timer to make it 2-0 in the Terriers' favor with 9:35 left in the opening period.
- The Friars ended up with a 5-on-3 advantage for 33 seconds in the second period and got on the board soon after the first penalty expired to cut BU's lead in half.Â
- Lauren DeBlois collected her own rebound in the slot and did a quick drop-off to Sara Hjalmarsson, who found Caroline Peterson for a goal from the right circle at 6:15 of the second.
- PC used another power-play opportunity - its sixth and final one of the night - to come up with an equalizer as DeBlois won a scramble for a rebound and pushed the puck past Brändli with 7:41 to play.
- Brändli came up with a big stop on Peterson late in regulation to keep the game in a deadlock.
- BU held a 4-1 advantage in shots during overtime but could not come up with a winner.Â
- In the shootout, Brändli came through with a glove save on PC's first try and Nearis potted her try to give BU a lead through one round.
- Neither team was successful in round two but the Friars tied it in the next round thanks to Reichen Kirchmair.
- It went to an extra round, where PC's Lindsay Bochna missed the net on her attempt before Martin came though with the shootout winner.
