BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team has completed its staff for the 2023-24 season as former captain Reagan Rust '19 is returning to the program as an assistant coach and Bret Gilmour has been named the team's goaltending coach, as announced by head coach Tara Watchorn on Thursday.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Reagan Rust and Bret Gilmour to our coaching staff," said Watchorn. "Ultimately, having a staff who can serve as role models and mentors, not just the on-ice component but off ice as well, is important to me and I have no doubt that we have the people to do that"
Rust is back on Commonwealth Ave. after recently wrapping up a playing career in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) and the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) in addition to stints in Hungary and Sweden. She played in all 24 games for the PHF's Metropolitan Riveters in 2022-23.
Rust, who has served as a mental performance coach and mentor with the Female Athlete Society, which she founded, never missed a game in her two seasons with the Terriers after transferring from RIT in 2017. In her 143-game collegiate career she amassed 63 points on 17 goals and 46 assists.
"Reagan will also be an immediate asset to our group, bringing a great deal of experience as an athlete and fellow Terrier with her. I had the pleasure of coaching Reagan during her time at BU and after watching her have a tremendous amount of leadership, passion and grit then, I am so excited to see what she can do behind the bench as a Terrier."
As a senior captain, Rust was a 2019 Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star and won the John B. Simpson Award, which is given to a Terrier senior who demonstrates enthusiasm and leadership. She scored the game-winning shootout goal in the 2019 Beanpot semifinals and was inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame in 2020.
Rust graduated from BU in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in business administration & management with a concentration in marketing from the Questrom School of Business.
Gilmour, who has served as a volunteer coach at BU for the past two seasons, has been elevated to the full-time goaltending coach position.
"Bret has been with the group for the past couple of seasons as the volunteer goalie coach and we are excited to have him on board in a more official capacity this season," said Watchorn. "Bret brings great expertise in working with our goalies, but also brings amazing care and passion in working with all of our athletes. We are lucky have him back with us this season."
Gilmour also works at Stop It Goaltending as a director and is the chief science officer for The Greatness Lab, where he started as the director of sport psychology. He graduated from Canisius with a psychology degree before going on to receive a master's from BU in counseling with a focus on sports psychology.
A former junior hockey goaltender in his native Ontario, Gilmour began his coaching career immediately after graduating from Canisius. He spent three years at Harvard (2018-21) as a hockey performance consultant and video coordinator and he has served as an evaluator for USA Hockey since 2017.
