Terriers Head to Nashville to Take on Robert Morris, Minnesota State

The Boston University women's ice hockey team heads south for Thanksgiving to take part in the SMASHVILLE Showcase in Nashville on Nov. 23 & 25. The Terriers will open the tournament on Friday against Robert Morris before closing it on Sunday versus Minnesota State.

The is the second-most southern destination in program history, topped slightly by last year's trip to Las Vegas.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • The Terriers are averaging 9.5 shots more per game than their opponents this season. At this point last November, BU had a minus-8.1 shot differential, resulting in a plus-17.6 swing one year later.
  • Senior Lacey Martin, who scored her first career hat trick on Nov. 4, leads the team in both points (13) and goals (7) and has assisted on four of BU's past five goals.
  • Martin is currently on a four-game point streak with six points (1g, 5a) during the run.
  • Sophomore Clara Yuhn (2g, 6a) has eight points and seniors Catherine Foulem (5g, 2a) and Andi Calderone (3g, 4a), sophomore Sydney Healey (4g, 3a) and junior Maggie Hanzel (2g, 5a) have contributed seven points each to a balanced attack.
  • The Terriers rank second among Hockey East teams in both power play (22.5%) and penalty kill (89.2%). The penalty kill ranks sixth nationally.
  • Senior Andi Calderone, who shares the team lead in plus-minus at +3, had career highs in goals (2) and points (3) in the Nov. 10 win at UNH and now has three goals on the year after scoring just twice in her first three seasons.
  • Calderone (3g, 4a) and junior Maggie Hanzel (2g, 5a) each have seven points this season and they rank tied for fifth among Hockey East defenders in points per game while graduate student Nadia Mattivi (1g, 5a) is tied for seventh.
  • Graduate student Alexa Matses and freshman Mari Pietersen have shared time in goal and Matses has the edge in save percentage (.891 - .858) and goals-against-average (2.58 - 2.80).
  • The Terriers rank second among Hockey East teams and seventh nationally in faceoff percentage at 54.7.
     

SCOUTING THE COLONIALS

  • Robert Morris has won four of its past five contests and is coming off a home split with RIT, capped by a 3-2 victory on Saturday.
  • The Colonials also have wins over Syracuse (2), Mercyhurst, Saint Anselm (2) and Union.
  • Redshirt freshman Alaina Giampietro leads the squad in points (13) and goals (7) while sophomore Morgan Giannone is right behind with 12 points on six goals and six assists.
  • Graduate student Emma Gorski and sophomore Maggie Hatch have shared time in goal and Hatch has been the better netminder as of late, winning her past three starts.
     

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS

  • Minnesota State ended a 10-game losing streak on Saturday with a 3-2 overtime win at Bemidji State to earn a weekend split with the Beavers.
  • The Mavericks opened the season with a sweep of Sacred Heart before the losing streak.
  • Senior Jamie Nelson leads the team in points (11) and goals (8) while classmate Sydney Langseth has 10 points on the strength of a team-best nine assists.
  • Junior Suzette Faucher and senior Lauren Barbro have split time in goal this season with fairly even numbers between the two.
     

SERIES HISTORIES

  • BU is 7-1-0 all-time against Robert Morris and this is the first neutral-site meeting.
  • The Colonials' lone win came in the most recent meeting 10 years ago when they split a weekend series in Pittsburgh.
  • BU and Minnesota State have only met once before as the Terriers earned a 5-2 win over the Mavericks in the D1 in DC tournament on Nov. 24, 2017.
