BOSTON - In a hard-fought game that came down to the final moments, the Boston University women's ice hockey team came up just short in a 2-1 contest against visiting Boston College on Saturday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
The Eagles scored the lone goal of the opening period and took a 2-0 lead early in the second. The Terriers put together several chances in the middle stanza and drew within one on senior
Haylee Blinkhorn's third goal of the season.
BU had a power play for the final 1:26 of regulation and were inches away from forcing overtime before BC held on for the victory.
The Terriers had a six-game Hockey East unbeaten streak come to an end and now stand at 10-17-3 overall and 9-13-3 in league play. The Eagles improved to 18-12-1 with a 15-10-0 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The rivals quickly engaged in a back-and-forth contest in the early stages and the Eagles were able to strike first late in the opening period.
- Gaby Roy corralled the puck following a battle at the far boards and passed to Cailin Flynn, whose shot from above the left circle was blocked.Â
- Roy was in perfect position for the deflection and sent the puck to the back of the net at the 17:18 mark.
- The Terriers came out strong to start the second and quickly drew a penalty that led to a power play that produced a handful of good looks only to have Abigail Levy and the BC penalty kill come up big to keep it a 1-0 game.
- Soon after the penalty expired, BC doubled its lead when Alexie Guay stopped a clearing attempt at the left point before flinging the puck towards the net and getting it through traffic before it eluded BU netminder Andrea Brändli at the 3:47 mark of the second.Â
- BU ended up having a 17-8 shot advantage in the middle stanza and were finally rewarded when junior Lacey Martin found Blinkhorn open in the right slot at 14:41 after sophomore Maggie Hanzel broke up a play along the near boards in the neutral zone.
- An evenly played third period produced no goals but the Terriers came close to sending the game to overtime on their late power play.
- Levy and the Eagles held on for the victory, completing a sweep in the season series in the process.
