CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Boosted by stellar pitching performances from senior
Lizzy Avery and freshman
Kasey Ricard along with timely hitting, the Boston University softball team claimed shutout victories against both Kent State and 2022 NCAA participant Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon at Charlotte's Queen City Classic.
The Terriers (9-3) finished with a combined 12-3 advantage in hits to run-rule the Golden Flashes (4-6), 8-0 (6), and edge the ACC's Yellow Jackets (5-6), 2-0. The shutout victories over two different non-conference opponents on the same day marked BU's first since blanking both Stetson and George Mason back in 2020.

Audrey Sellers caught a combined 12 strikeouts from Avery and Ricard while also batting 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman
Brooke Deppiesse delivered the go-ahead two-out RBI triple against Georgia Tech and ended up tying Sellers and senior
Caitlin Coker at two RBIs on the day. Junior

GAME 1: BU - 8, Kent State - 0 (6 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kent State threatened early with a one-out single and walk before Avery ended the threat with a ground out and fly out to right.
- After stranding Keleher at second in the first, BU took advantage of an error and walk in the second with Sellers delivering a two-out, two-RBI single to left.
- The Terriers added three more runs in the third after loading the bases on pair of singles and infield grounder.
- Sophomore Tyesha Williams followed Deppiesse's RBI sac fly with an RBI ground out, and graduate student Nicole Amodio drew a rundown to help classmate Emily Gant score from third.
- The Golden Flashes earned their only other hit in the fourth, but Avery collected two strikeouts to keep them off the scoreboard.
- BU added two more runs in the fourth with Sellers scoring on Roncin's RBI single and Keleher reaching home on a fielding error.
- Avery retired the last eight batters, and Sellers ended the game in the bottom of the sixth by walking to first, advancing to third on back-to-back singles from Keleher and Roncin and then scoring on Coker's bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
GAME 2: BU - 2, Georgia Tech - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Keleher earned a walk in both the first and third but ended up stranded on base, as Blake Neleman (2-2) posted six strikeouts through the first three innings.
- BU broke through in the fourth when Gant earned a one-out, full-count walk and scored on Deppiesse's two-out RBI triple.
- The Yellow Jackets had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom half against Ricard with a two-out walk and single, but she ended the threat with a fly out to left.
- Sellers added a critical insurance run in the next inning by leading off with a single to left, taking second on Keleher's single and scoring on Coker's RBI grounder that forced a diving stop.
- BU loaded the bases on back-to-back two-out walks before Georgia Tech prevented further damage with a ground out.
- Ricard struck out the side in the fifth and added two more strikeouts in the sixth to maintain the 2-0 lead entering the seventh.
- The Yellow Jackets tried to mount a rally with a walk and sac bunt, but Ricard earned a fly out and a shutout-sealing strikeout.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Six of the Terriers' nine wins have been decided by run-rule decision.
- BU earned its third shutout in four years against the ACC after blanking Virginia in 2020 and Boston College in 2021.
- Keleher now owns 63 walks, seven shy of cracking the top 10 in the program record book, while Coker has 109 runs scored, eight away from the top 10.
- BU moved to 2-4 all-time against Georgia Tech in the first meeting since the Yellow Jackets beat the Terriers two times during the 2009 NCAA regional.
- The Terriers are 2-0 against Kent State after pulling out a 10-9 (9) victory in 2011.
