Terriers Knock Off No. 20/18 UMass, 12-6

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Vince D'Alto scored five goals and classmate Louis Perfetto notched one goal and four assists to lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory at No. 20/18 UMass on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
BU (2-1) handed UMass (2-1) its first loss of the season thanks to an outstanding defensive effort and a robust offensive performance against the top defense in the country. The Terriers scored 12 goals on a Minuteman defense and goaltender that had allowed just 5.50 goals per game entering Saturday. Graduate goalkeeper Matt Garber made seven saves and anchored a BU defense that held the Minutemen scoreless over the final 20:52 of the contest.
Graduate student Timmy Ley added two goals and two assists as the three starting attackers for BU combined for eight of the Terriers' 12 tallies, with at least one of three scoring or assisting on 11 of the 12 goals. Junior Tommy Bourque matched his career high with three goals and added an assist to match his career best with four points. Graduate student Matt Hilburn added a goal and an assist while sophomore Jimmy O'Connell and junior Tommy Jepson each recorded an assist for the third straight game
Defensively, graduate student Jett Dziama matched his career high with six ground balls while senior Roy Meyer gathered five ground balls and also forced a turnover. Senior Patrick Morrison notched three ground balls and recorded one caused turnover while sophomore Trey Brown collected two ground balls and caused two turnovers. At the faceoff X, junior Conor Calderone (7-of-11) and sophomore Benjamin Ferrara (4-of-7) combined to go 11-of-20 with four ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bourque opened the scoring at 11:02 of the first quarter after Perfetto forced a turnover on the ride and dished it to Bourque for the finish.
- UMass answered at 9:38 to tie the game at 1-1.
- It remained even until D'Alto cashed in on a man-up chance off another Perfetto feed at 4:11.
- Perfetto then assisted on Bourque's second strike of the opening quarter to make it 3-1 after 15 minutes.
- D'Alto extended the Terriers' advantage to 4-1 just 25 seconds into the second stanza before Ley scored on an EMO at 11:18 to push the lead to 5-1.
- It became 6-1 thanks to D'Alto's third of the day at 8:30, but UMass ended the run midway through the frame.
- Perfetto's first goal of the day with 4:07 on the clock made it 7-2, with UMass converting a late man-up opportunity to create a 7-3 halftime score.
- As he did in the first half, Bourque notched the first goal of the second half, scoring 1:29 into the third quarter to make it 8-3.
- UMass went on a three-goal run to cut the deficit to two at 8-6 with 5:52 remaining, but goals from Ley and Hilburn pushed the lead back to four at 10–6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
- After scoring the final goal of the third, Hilburn assisted on D'Alto's fourth-quarter opener to make it 11-6.
- The Terrier defense and ride then went to work, holding UMass to 3-of-5 on clears and just five shot attempts, two of which Garber saved, before D'Alto iced the game with his five goal of the day with 1:22 to play.
- The Terriers attempted 48 shots and held UMass to just 26 shot attempts on Saturday, including an 18-3 advantage in shots in the second quarter.
- One of the top riding teams in the nation, the Terriers forced five failed clears on Saturday, with Perfetto causing two turnovers and D'Alto grabbing four ground balls in addition to forcing a giveaway.
- BU has outscored opponents, 13-4, in the fourth quarter this season.
- D'Alto (11g, 5a), Perfetto (7g, 7a) and Ley (8g, 2a) have combined for 26 goals and 14 assists through three games.
- The Terriers won the ground ball battle, 35-25, and forced nine of the Minutemen's 19 turnovers.
- BU was 2-of-5 on EMOs and allowed just one man-up goal on two UMass attempts.
- BU will open both its home schedule and its Patriot League schedule on Saturday when the Terriers welcome Colgate to Nickerson Field.
- Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
