Hutson, Greene Named to Hockey East All-Rookie Team

March 8, 2023

AMESBURY, Mass. - Freshmen Ryan Greene and Lane Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team were named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, the league announced on Wednesday.

Both Terriers were terrific this season as they helped lead BU to the Hockey East regular-season title. This continues an impressive streak for the Terriers, who have had at least one All-Rookie Team honoree in each of the past 16 seasons. BU's all-time total of 52 All-Rookie Team selections is the most of any other school.

Greene, who won the league's first Rookie of the Week award in October and added a Player of the Week selection to his resumé in November, totaled 27 points on nine goals and 18 assists, including 20 points (6g, 14a) in 22 league contests. He began his Terrier career with two goals and an assist in a season-opening 8-2 win over Bentley. Greene's best performance of the season came at UMass when he tallied two goals and assisted on three others for a career-best five points in a 7-2 triumph over the Minutemen. He lit the lamp against UMass the next night to finish the weekend sweep with six points.

All four of Greene's multi-point games came against league foes. The Paradise, N.L., native was particularly good in the second half of the season, putting together a five-game point streak in January to help BU complete a 5-0-0 homestand. He notched at least one point in 11 of his final 17 games, including a four-game point streak in February that helped BU secure its spot atop the league standings.

Hutson was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team after recording one of the best rookie seasons in league history. He is the first defenseman to ever lead Hockey East in scoring in the league's 39-year history, posting 34 points on nine goals and a league-high 25 assists in 24 Hockey East tilts. In 33 overall games, Hutson led Hockey East with 43 points on 12 goals and a league-high 31 assists. He ranks third in the NCAA in assists and is first among NCAA defensemen in both assists and points.

A native of North Barrington, Illinois, Hutson was a two-time Hockey East Defender of the Month, the league's Player of the Month for January and the National Rookie of the Month for January. Additionally, Hutson was a six-time Rookie of the Week honoree and also earned Player of the Week accolades in November. He totaled 15 multi-point games, including three three-point efforts and a four-assist performance at Maine on Feb. 3.

Hutson took home two additional awards on Wednesday; he was officially named as the league's Scoring Champion and also won the Hockey East Three Stars Award, as he compiled the highest total number of points earned when named a first, second, or third star of the game in Hockey East contests.

BU is the top seed in the Hockey East Men's Tournament and will host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 11, at 4:30 p.m.
