January 26, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Jack Hughes scored his fourth goal of the season and classmate Mathieu Caron made 28 saves, but the top-ranked Boston University men's ice hockey team fell at No. 2 Boston College, 4-1, on Friday night at Conte Forum.
BU (16-5-1, 11-2-1 HE) got within one of BC (17-4-1, 10-3-1 HE) with 6:37 remaining in regulation, but a pair of empty-net goals sealed the win for the Eagles and snapped the Terriers' seven-game win streak. Senior Dylan Peterson and freshman Aiden Celebrini assisted on Hughes' goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shots were even at 13 apiece after 20 minutes, with Caron in particular playing well during the first frame.
- BC opened the scoring 3:34 into the second stanza. The officials missed Peterson having his stick lifted out of his hands and BC took advantage, lighting the lamp just seconds later to grab a 1-0 lead.
- The Terriers hit three posts in the middle frame in an attempt to find an equalizer before BC doubled its lead with 2:45 on the clock.
- Graduate student Cade Webber made two sensational blocks with just under 8:00 left to keep BU within striking distance.
- Those blocks proved to be important because about a minute later Hughes got the Terriers on the board. Peterson's centering feed caromed to Hughes in the left circle, and he uncorked a wrist shot past Jacob Fowler.
- BU pulled Caron in favor of an extra attacker with 2:11 remaining in regulation and an offensive-zone faceoff, but the Eagles scored an empty-netter with 1:54 to play and added another one 51 seconds later to create the 4-1 final.
GAME NOTES
- The 292nd Battle of Comm. Ave was the first to feature the top two teams in the country according to the national polls.

- Hughes has recorded a point in three straight games and has lit the lamp in each of the last two tilts.
- Since Dec. 1, Caron owns a 1.50 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage.
- This was the first league loss for BU since its Hockey East opener on Oct. 13 at New Hampshire.
