Giaquinto Named 2024-25 Women's Hockey Captain; Hanzel, Shanahan, Shaunessy to Serve as Assistants
June 14, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey program and head coach Tara Watchorn have announced that Tamara Giaquinto will serve as captain for the 2024-25 season with Maggie Hanzel, Callie Shanahan and Julia Shaunessy filling the assistant captain roles.
All four Terriers will be wearing a letter for the first time. Giaquinto, Hanzel and Shaunessy have a combined 11 years of experience as defenders for the Terriers while Shanahan will be the first BU goaltender to serve as a captain since Erin O'Neil during the 2017-18 season.
Giaquinto and Shaunessy are returning for a fifth season while Hanzel and Shanahan are rising seniors.
Giaquinto is a veteran of 106 contests and is coming off a 2023-24 season where she set career highs in all offensive categories with 15 points on five goals and 10 assists to go along with 27 blocked shots. She has 137 blocks over her BU career, including a team-best 55 two seasons ago.
Hanzel also set career marks this past season, tallying nine points on three goals and six assists while becoming a mainstay in the BU lineup. She has appeared in 52 games for the Terriers.
Despite being limited to 85 games over the past four seasons due to injury, Shaunessy has been a two-way presence as a defender since arriving on campus. She has 21 career points with eight goals and 13 assists. Her father, Scott, was an assistant captain for the
One of six goaltenders at USA Hockey's 2024 World Championship Evaluation Camp, Shanahan missed the first half of last season due to injury but came back to post career-best 2.20 goals-against average with a .911 save percentage and a pair of shutouts.
The Terriers announced their full 2024-25 schedule last week and will open the campaign on Oct. 1 against Merrimack at Agganis Arena.
Coach Watchorn on Tamara Giaquinto:
"I very grateful and excited that Tamara accepted our offer to be this year's team captain. Tamara had a breakout senior season both on and off the ice, and it was a no-brainer for our staff to elevate her to be our captain for her fifth season. A unanimous selection by her teammates as well, Tamara embodies what we value as BU women's ice hockey players. Her commitment, passion and enthusiasm elevate her peers and coaches every day she shows up to the rink and I can't wait to work with her to continue to build off what we started last season."
Coach Watchorn on Maggie Hanzel:
"Maggie is consistently looked up to by her peers for her cerebral approach to her relationships, communication and problem solving. Mature beyond her years, Maggie takes great pride in holding herself to the highest standard, both in the classroom and on the ice. Maggie is consistently curious and striving to master new things and that commitment to growth and excellence is exactly the mindset we want for all the players that come through our program. I look forward to working with Maggie in an official leadership capacity this season."
Coach Watchorn on Callie Shanahan:
"Callie is the definition of what it takes to be an elite athlete at the D1 level and the standards we have for future Terriers who play for this program. Her commitment and attention to detail is unmatched in everything she does and her experience playing at the highest levels continues to help inspire and elevate the people around her. But what makes Callie such a great leader on this team is the combination of her work ethic with her positive attitude, optimism and spirit that she brings to each and every interaction she has."
Coach Watchorn on Julia Shaunessy:
"When Julia decided she was going to stay at BU for her fifth year, there was no doubt in my mind that she would be a captain for us this season. Julia has a strong presence and voice in our locker room and has a natural ability to unite the people around her. She has a consistent attitude with how she approaches the game and shows up each day, and I look forward to utilizing her voice to continue to push this program forward."
