October 3, 2025

BOSTON – The No. 13 Boston University women's ice hockey team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 HE) dropped a 5-0 contest to No. 3 Minnesota (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) in its season opener on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena.

The Golden Gophers scored one goal in each of the first two periods, including a power-play goal in the first. Minnesota tacked on three goals in the final 20 minutes to win 5-0.

Each team was called for five penalties with BU serving two major penalties. Sophomore netminder Mari Pietersen made a career-high 44 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a fast start to the game, BU went on the power play at 5:16 due to a Minnesota elbowing call but did not find the back of the net.

  • The Gophers were successful on the challenge which changed the penalty to contact to the head and was called as a game misconduct.
  • Minnesota then took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal.
  • BU went on the power play again at 2:48 in the second frame but was unsuccessful with the extra skater.
  • Minnesota shot the puck at the 8:13 mark and it was deflected into the air and landed in the net to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Terriers went on the power play at 13:10 due to a Minnesota hooking call before they were called for tripping at 14:22, resulting in 4-on-4 play.
  • BU then added another skater to the box, this time for tripping, at 15:10, causing BU to defend through 4-on-3 and 5-on-3 situations.
  • Neither team found the back of the net through the string of penalties.
  • Minnesota was called for interference with 1:35 to go in the second but they successfully killed the penalty at the start of the third.
  • The Gophers took a 3-0 lead at the 3:56 mark in the third.
  • With just under 10 minutes to play, BU served another major penalty, this time for hitting from behind, while Minnesota concurrently served a minor for cross checking.
  • While no one scored through the duration of the penalties, Minnesota tacked on two goals at the 16:57 and 18:05 marks to secure the 5-0 win.
