No. 22 Softball Records Day One Split With Win Over UMBC, Loss to East Carolina
February 14, 2025 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After earning a 9-2 victory over UMBC, the No. 22 Boston University softball team dropped a 1-0 pitcher's duel to East Carolina Friday evening on opening day of the Pirate Clash.
The Terriers (6-1) posted eight hits, including four for extra bases, to defeat the Retrievers (0-1) but then only recorded seven singles against the host Pirates (4-3) with a third-inning defensive error proving to be the difference.
Both junior Brooke Deppiesse and sophomore Libby Walsh tallied a team-high three hits apiece on the day with Deppiesse adding three RBIs alongside two runs scored. Sophomore Kylie Doherty and freshman Addie Lucier posted two RBIs apiece against UMBC, as BU drew 10 walks, one shy of tying the program record, to reach a season high in runs scored.
In the circle, both BU starters went the distance, combining for 12 strikeouts against eight hits without allowing a single earned run. Freshman Danika Nell struck out seven Retrievers with three walks allowed to pick up her third win of the season, while Ricard allowed just one walk to the Pirates in the second contest.

Game 1: #22/RV BU - 9, UMBC - 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU quickly jumped on the scoreboard with the help of three walks and Deppiesse's one-out bases-clearing triple to right center.
- Walsh added a two-out RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Sophomore Kyomie Apalit tripled to right center to start the second inning and shortly thereafter scored on freshman Addie Lucier's RBI grounder.
- UMBC threatened in the bottom half with a one-out single and a stolen base, but Nell ended the threat on a pair of swinging strikeouts.
- In the third, Lucier helped BU take advantage of another walk with her two-out RBI down down the left field line for a 6-0 lead.
- The Retrievers avoided the shutout by taking advantage of a defensive miscue with a pair of two-out RBI singles during the fourth inning and threatened again with two on base in the fifth before striking out swinging..
- Doherty plated two runs in the sixth on a two-out double, and Apalit added another run thanks in part to a walk and wild pitch.
- Nell sealed the victory by retiring the last seven Retrievers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After BU stranded a runner on base in each of the first two innings against ExtraInning Softball's No. 19 newcomer, Kendall Frost, Apalit led off the third with a single but was tagged out leaning too far toward second. Lucier followed with a walk, but Frost then earned a strikeout and fly out to center.
- During the bottom half after earning a two-out double in the first against Ricard, the Pirates led off with a single to left and then quickly had runners on the corners when BU made an errant throw toward first on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
- The Pirates drove the ball deep enough toward second to grab the 1-0 lead.
- Coming off last weekend's 1-0 complete game loss at South Carolina, Frost allowed another lead-off single in the fourth to Deppiesse but a strong throw to second from the left field wall led to another Terrier being tagged out.
- Trying to mount a rally in the seventh, sophomore Sophie Naivar singled through the left side and advanced to second on Walsh's one-out single to center.
- However, BU then grounded into a 5-3 double play to suffer the shutout loss.
- BU will continue the Pirate Clash with a rematch against ECU starting at 11 a.m.
- The Terriers will also face Radford in the next game afterwards, currently scheduled for 1 p.m.
