Softball Shuts Out UNLV, Falls to No. 24/21 South Carolina in DH Split

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After posting an 8-0 victory over UNLV, the Boston University softball team dropped a 9-1 decision to No. 24/21 South Carolina for the doubleheader split Friday afternoon at the Garnet & Black Invitational.
Following the two games decided in run-rule fashion, the Terriers move to 8-3, while the Rebels fall to 7-3 and the host Gamecocks remain unbeaten at 12-0. BU may have only batted .182 on the day but did show patience at the plate, earning 10 walks and three hit-by-pitches for a .413 on-base percentage.
Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Danika Nell (4-0) went the distance in the first contest, totaling eight strikeouts against three hits allowed for her second solo shutout of the season. Junior Kasey Ricard (4-2) held South Carolina scoreless through the first three innings before the Gamecocks' bats broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with five runs in response to junior Brooke Deppiesse's solo homer.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Nell earned two strikeouts in the top of the first, the Terriers scored five runs off just one hit in the bottom half.
- Freshman Addie Lucier and junior Megan Coyle started off with back-to-back hit-by-pitches and then loaded bases on freshman Biz Baglieri's walk.
- Freshman Camryn Lyons followed sophomore Kylie Doherty and classmate Libby Walsh's RBI walks with a two-RBI single through the right side.
- Senior Tyesha Williams hit an RBI grounder to extend the lead to 5-0.
- The Rebels led off the third with the first hit, but Nell earned a strikeout and pair of fly outs to end the threat.
- With two outs in the bottom half, Walsh tripled to left center and scored on Williams' RBI single to right.
- After Coyle hit an RBI single in the fourth, UNLV loaded the bases on walks in the bottom of the fifth and then allowed the Terriers to walk off with Sophie Naivar earning an RBI for the run-rule victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gamecocks looked to strike first in the bottom of the first inning with two one-out singles and a walk, but Ricard left the bases loaded thanks to a strikeout and infield pop up to short.
- With two outs in the third, Deppiesse launched the first pitch to left for the 1-0 lead.
- The Gamecocks threatened again in the bottom half with a one-out single and two-out walk before flying out to right.
- South Carolina made a pitching change in the fourth and earned three strikeouts to keep the score at 1-0.
- The Gamecocks followed with five runs off four hits, including a lead-off single and RBI double to left that helped set up an RBI sac fly.
- After Ricard earned a foul out to short, South Carolina claimed another double and consecutive walks with two outs before delivering a bases-clearing double for 5-1 lead.
- Sophomore Kyomi Apalit doubled to right center with two outs but ended up stranded at second.
- South Carolina then put the game away against freshman Ava Johnson with four runs off three hits, highlighted by the walk-off bases-clearing double.
- BU will face both UNLV and South Carolina a second time, starting with the Rebels at 10:30 a.m. and then the Gamecocks at 1 p.m.
