NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The No. 8 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell in overtime at Merrimack, 2-1, on Friday night at Lawler Rink.
Sophomore Jack Harvey scored for BU (15-10-1, 10-6-1 HE) in the first period but Nick Pierre answered just over four minutes later for Merrimack (11-15-1, 7-9-1 HE) to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team broke through until Caelan Fitzpatrick scored 20 seconds into overtime.
Freshman Cole Hutson and junior Quinn Hutson assisted on Harvey's eighth goal of the season. Freshman goaltender Mikhail Yegorov was terrific for the Terriers, matching his career high with 26 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers did well to withstand an early surge from the Warriors in the opening two minutes.
- Harvey rang the left post with a shot at the 6:15 mark of the contest.
- The sophomore was not denied a second time when he gave BU a 1-0 lead at the 13:24 mark. Harvey carried the puck up the left side into the offensive zone before ripping a wrister over Max Lundgren's glove and under the crossbar for his eighth goal of the season.
- Freshman Brandon Svoboda had a shorthanded breakaway bid denied at end of the Terriers' first penalty kill, keeping the score at 1-0.
- Merrimack cashed in on its second power play of the night to send the teams to the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
- Harvey nearly had a second with 11:45 left in the middle frame, but he hit the left post again during a 2-on-1 with junior Ryan Greene.
- BU outshot Merrimack, 11-5, in a fast-paced second stanza but the score remained at 1-1 entering the third.
- Yegorov made a nice left-pad stop on a point-blank bid at the top of his crease early in the third to keep the game tied.
- Senior Jack Page then got a stick in the passing lane to stifle a 3-on-1 chance for Merrimack.
- Senior Matt Copponi nearly gave BU the lead with 2:48 to go but his wraparound bid somehow stayed out.
- Yegorov came up with a clutch glove save on a 1-on-1 bid with 52.8 on the clock and then made another key save with mere seconds remaining to force overtime, but the Warriors capitalized on their first rush of overtime to secure the win.
