No. 16/17 Terriers Post 16-4 Victory Over Holy Cross

BOSTON - The No. 16/17 Boston University men's lacrosse team (8-2, 4-1 PL) dominated Patriot League foe Holy Cross (3-8, 1-4 PL) with a 16-4 victory at Nickerson Field on Saturday evening during BU's annual Lax-A-Palooza. BU also won a point in the Turnpike Trophy competition with the win.
The Terriers secured a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before tacking on three goals in the second to head into halftime up 5-0. BU then exploded with nine unanswered goals to build to a 14-0 lead. Holy Cross scored four goals in the fourth stanza to BU's three as the Terriers outlasted the Crusaders, 16-4.
Senior Jimmy O'Connell had a hat trick in the first half and added another goal in the second to lead BU with four on the day. Junior Jimmy Kohr scored three while freshmen Timothy Shannehan and Finn Lawrence each scored twice. Senior Zach Travaglini, junior Tommy Garofalo, freshmen Ben Morris, Andrew Pape and Mike Luce each found the back of the net once. O'Connell and Shannehan each had three assists while Morris, Garofalo, Pape and senior Brenden Kelly each recorded one.
O'Connell's seven points set a career high for the senior. Kohr had his tenth multi-point performance of the season while Shannehan had his ninth. Senior goalkeeper Will Barnes stopped all 10 shots he faced in three quarters of work. Freshman Madden Murphy went 9-for-9 at the faceoff X and matched his career high with five ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU opened the scoring just 3:09 into the first when freshman Timothy Shannehan sent the ball in at the upper-right corner.
- A scoring drought persisted for both teams for over ten minutes.
- With 1:27 to play in the first quarter, senior Jimmy O'Connell extended BU's lead to 2-0 with a shot from his knees on freshman Andrew Pape's pass.
- Holy Cross was called for slashing with 8:19 to go in the second quarter, putting BU on a man-up advantage.
- Three seconds before the penalty expired, Shannehan passed to junior Tommy Garofelo, who gave BU a 3-0 lead.
- The Terriers continued to tack on to their lead when O'Connell found the back of the net just before the shot clock expired at the 6:00 mark. He was assisted by freshman Ben Morris.
- O'Connell made it a hat trick day when his third goal, and BU's fifth, was scored off a spin move at the crease with 1:55 to play in the first half.
- BU secured a 6-0 lead headed into the half when Kohr's shot fired past multiple defenders and into the Crusaders' net with three seconds left on the clock.
- Senior goalkeeper Will Barnes had seven saves between the posts in the first half.
- Holy Cross turned over the ball at the 13:42 mark, allowing BU to get back into the offensive zone.
- Morris then found the back of the net with his fourth goal of the season at 12:54.
- BU won the following faceoff and extended its lead to 8-0 when Pape scored from the arch with 11:36 to go in the third.
- O'Connell set up Travaglini, who scored BU's ninth goal of the day.
- At the 8:05 mark, Kohr sent a rocketing shot into the net and was helped by Shannehan to put BU up 10-0.
- O'Connell scored his fourth of the day off a tic-tac-toe setup across the Crusaders' zone. He was assisted by Garofalo at the 6:57 mark.
- With 3:56 to go in the third frame, Barnes made a save and set up Luce, who scored his first career goal to give BU a 12-0 lead.
- On the next possession, O'Connell snagged a ground ball and found Shannehan for BU's 13th goal.
- The Terriers held a 13-0 lead headed into the fourth quarter when they replaced Barnes with freshman Connor Phillips, who made two saves in his collegiate debut.
- Kohr continued his scoring ways in the fourth with a goal at the 13:43 mark off a pass from O'Connell.
- Holy Cross got on the board with 10:44 to play as BU continued to lead 14-1.
- Lawrence responded with his first career goal with 9:31 to play, thanks to help from Kelly.
- Holy Cross then swapped its netminder but Lawrence extended BU's lead to 16-1 just 46 seconds later.
- Holy Cross scored the final three goals of the game to create the 16-4 final.
- Barnes lowered his goals-against average to 8.12 and raised his save percentage to .610 with his perfect 45:00 of work.
- O'Connell joined Shannehan in the 40-point club, as the senior now has 21 goals and 19 assists.
- Shannehan maintained his place atop the team leaderboard with 45 points (22g, 23a).
- Kohr's final goal of the day was his team-leading 30th of the season.
- BU outshot Holy Cross, 28 to 18.
- BU went 29-for-32 on clears while Holy Cross went 18-for-22.
- The Terriers won 21 of 23 faceoffs.
- Holy Cross caused eight turnovers while BU caused six.
- The Crusaders had 13 turnovers overall and BU had 15.
- BU corralled 39 ground balls to the Crusaders' 27.
- The Terriers committed zero penalties in the game while Holy Cross committed one.
- The Terriers will host No. 11 Duke at Nickerson Field on Saturday (April 5) at 1 p.m.
