March 4, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Freshman Cole Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month, the league announced on Tuesday.
Hutson, a defenseman, led all NCAA rookies regardless of position with five February goals, including two game-winning goals and a game-tying goal at No. 9 UConn that was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter. He also added six assists for 11 points, which was one behind the national leader. Hutson notched a point in seven of the Terriers' eight February games.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Hutson was not just the league's best rookie in February but he was also the top defenseman in the entire country during that 28-day span. No defenseman in the nation had more goals or points than Hutson in February. He began the month by totaling two goals and two assists for four points in a 7-1 win over Harvard in the Beanpot semifinals before scoring the winning goal in a 4-1 triumph over No. 1 Boston College that clinched the program's 32nd Beanpot title. Hutson was named Beanpot MVP for his efforts.
Hutson has been one of the nation's most dynamic players during his freshman campaign. He is tied for second among NCAA rookies with 33 points and is third among the country's first-year players with 23 assists. Hutson leads all rookie defensemen as well as all Hockey East blue liners, regardless of class, in goals (10), assists (23) and points (33).
