Softball Rolls to DH Sweep at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Boston University softball team opened with five runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a doubleheader sweep at Holy Cross Friday afternoon.
Outscoring the Crusaders (6-22, 0-5 PL) by a combined score of 17-2, the Terriers improve to 24-11 (5-0 PL) while extending their NCAA leading active win streak against conference opponents to 32 games. Junior Kasey Ricard (16-7) kept Holy Cross' bats in check with nine strikeouts in eight total innings of work against just three hits and two walks allowed to collect both victories.
Junior Megan Coyle launched a grand slam off a 2-1 pitch toward left field en route to a program record-tying seven RBIs in an 11-1 (5) game one victory, In the rematch, BU scored three runs in the second inning and added three more over the last two innings to complete the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first five Terriers to appear at the plate all reached home on a combined three hits and two walks with Coyle delivering a bases-clearing homer and junior Olivia DeLong adding a solo shot.
- Holy Cross recorded a two-out single in the bottom half but then fouled out to Coyle at first.
- After freshman Camryn Lyons and junior Brooke Deppiesse earned walks, sophomore Libby Walsh doubled to right center fro two RBIs.
- Coyle followed with an RBI sac fly to left to score Walsh for the 8-0 lead, and Ricard struck out the side for the 8-0 lead entering the third inning.
- BU took advantage of a walk, error and Deppiesse's single with Walsh's RBI walk and Coyle's RBI grounder to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Seeing her first action since Feb. 22 due to injury, freshman Danika Nell entered the circle in the fourth and gave up a run off two hits and a walk before earning a second strikeout to keep the Crusaders to just one run.
- After Doherty (single), Deppiesse (hit-by-pitch) and Walsh (single) loaded the bases during the top of the fifth, Coyle recorded her second sac fly to tie the program record for RBIs in a game at seven total.
- Ricard reentered the circle following Holy Cross' lead-off walk against Nell and sealed the run-rule victory with a strikeout and fly out to right.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders threatened first in the bottom of the first with Ali Sniegocki earning a lead-off walk and advancing to second on a sac bunt, but freshman Ava Johnson recorded a strikeout and ground out to keep the game scoreless.
- BU then scored three runs off three hits and an error in the second with Lyons, junior Aimee Metz and sophomore Kylie Doherty all plating one run apiece.
- After the Terriers stranded three on base in the third, Johnson recorded a pair of strikeouts in the bottom half to keep the 3-0 lead.
- Holy Cross threatened again in the fourth with a lead-off single and walk, but Ricard entered in relief to earn a strikeout and pair of fly outs.
- The Crusaders though continued to apply pressure and took advantage of two BU errors with a two-out double to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.
- Ricard loaded the bases with two walks but still remain ahead on a strike out looking.
- Metz started the sixth with a walk, advanced to third on Doherty's double and scored on Deppiesse's RBI grounder to second.
- The Terriers added two more in the seventh off two hits, including Deppiesse's RBI double, and a wild pitch.
- Following the Terriers' third error with one out, Ricard sealed the sweep on a liner to short and foul out to first.
- BU will conclude the three-game series at Holy Cross on Sunday (April 6) with a 1 p.m. start time.
