Softball Completes Turnpike Trophy Series Sweep With 6-1 Victory at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Highlighted by junior Megan Coyle's first-inning two-run homer and classmate Olivia DeLong's seventh-inning two-RBI single, the Boston University softball team completed the Turnpike Trophy series sweep with a 6-1 victory at Holy Cross Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers (25-11, 9-0 PL) outscored the Crusaders (6-23, 0-6 PL) by a combined score of 23-3 over the three contests to extend their NCAA leading conference opponent win streak to 33 games. Junior Kasey Ricard (17-7) went the distance with the help of three strikeouts to collect her third victory at Holy Cross.
DeLong delivered a career-high three hits, including her first ever double, while sophomore Libby Walsh tied a personal best with three hits en route to a pair of runs scored, a number matched by junior Brooke Deppiesse. Coyle claimed her second homer of the series after hitting a grand slam in the first inning of the first meeting held back on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Deppiesse started the contest by earning a one-out walk on four straight pitches and shortly thereafter rounded the bases when Coyle launched a two-out, 1-0 pitch to left to grab the lead for good, 2-0.
- DeLong and Lucier followed with back-to-back two-out singles before Holy Cross earned a ground out.
- After Ricard retired the first seven Crusaders, Holy Cross threatened with a one-out single and sac bunt but ended up stranding the runner in scoring position doe to a swinging strikeout.
- The Crusaders applied even more pressure in the fourth on a lead-off walk and one-out single before Ricard got out of the jam with a fly ball to center and a swinging strikeout.
- In the top of the fifth, Walsh singled to third with one out and scored another run on DeLong's RBI double to right to grab a 3-0 lead.
- Trying to mount a rally, the Crusaders jumped on the scoreboard thanks during the bottom half of the fifth in part due to a lead-off walk and back-to-back one-out singles, including Thibault's two-out RBI hit to left.
- Ricard loaded the bases on a walk but kept the two-run lead thanks to an infield pop up.
- Freshman Camryn Lyons looked to extend BU's lead with a lead-off double in the sixth, but the Crusaders later threw her out from left field at the plate.
- The Terriers broke open the game with three runs off four hits thanks to sophomore Kylie Doherty, Deppiesse and Walsh all hitting lead-off singles to help set up DeLong's one-out, two-RBI single to right center.
- BU extended the lead to 6-1 when Walsh scored on a wild pitch.
- Ricard sealed the victory on a pair of fly balls and ground out.
- BU will visit Boston College on Tuesday (April 8) for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
- The Terriers won the first meeting back in February, 3-0, to extend their win streak in the series to seven contests.
