No. 19 Terriers Felled by UMass, 2-0
January 10, 2026 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON — The No. 19 Boston University men's ice hockey team outshot the UMass Minutemen but never found the net in a 2-0 loss at Agganis Arena Saturday night.
The Terriers (10-9-1, 7-6-0 HE) were stymied by the Minutemen (10-10-0, 3-7-0 HE), who blocked 22 shots and capitalized on BU sophomore netminder Mikhail Yegorov's one mistake to come away with the win.
In the middle of the first period, Yegorov misplayed a puck behind the net and Václav Nestrašil was able to scoop it and tuck it into the Terriers' net, giving UMass a 1-0 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Jack Musa scored an empty-net goal as well.
Despite the mistake, Yegorov still saved 17-of-18 UMass shot. His efforts were matched on the other side, as UMass' Michael Hrabal posted a 26-save shutout. Both goaltenders only gave up one goal each all weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- At 7:37 in the first, freshman Jonathan Morello had a breakaway chance and deked around Hrabal, but the UMass goaltender was able to stretch just enough to rob Morello of a goal.
- The Minutemen were called for two tripping penalties in the opening frame, with the first coming at 9:35 and the second coming with just a second remaining.
- After UMass killed off the first penalty, Nestrašil scored the first goal of the game at 11:39.
- BU outshot UMass 12-3 in the first period but could not find the back of the net.
- The Minutemen killed the penalty to open the second and then in 4-on-4 action, appeared to score again at 3:56. A successful BU challenge found goaltender interference and the tally was erased.
- UMass was more aggressive in the second, peppering Yegorov with 10 shots on goal, but he was up to the task.
- BU went to the power play again with 1:04 remaining in the second but mustered just one shot on target and the Minutemen kept their 1-0 lead entering the third.
- 4:06 into the final stanza, Yegorov stood tall against a UMass attempt to double its lead, as he followed Matthew Wilde's move the whole way and used his pad to deflect the rubber.
- At 7:13 in the third, junior Jack Harvey made a sweet move to free himself up in the slot and fired on net, but Hrabal got a shoulder on it.
- BU pulled Yegorov with 1:51 to play, and Musa sent a loose puck all the way down and into the BU net.
- This game marked the first time since Feb. 23-24, 2024 that the Terriers gave up two goals or fewer in a weekend series.
- The Terriers had not been shutout since a 2-0 loss to Boston College on Jan. 25. 2025.
- BU outshot UMass 26-18 and the Terriers had 68 shot attempts compared to 38 for the Minutemen.
- Sophomore Cole Eiserman registered five shots on goal, a game high.
- The Terriers will play their third game in four days when they visit the Harvard Crimson on Monday (Jan. 12).
- Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on both NESN and ESPN+
