GAME 1: Northwestern - 6, BU - 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first inning, the Wildcats took advantage of a lead-off hit-by-pitch with a two-out RBI double against sophomore Danika Nell (0-3).
- The Terriers had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard too by loading the bases via a fielding error and a pair of two-out walks but grounded out to second.
- Northwestern added a run in the second with a two-out single and RBI double, which were followed in the third by a two-out walk and two-run homer for the 4-0 lead.
- BU cut deficit in half in the third, as senior Brooke Deppiesse led off with a walk and scored on Doherty's two-run homer to right center.
- The Wildcats responded during the fourth inning with another two-out RBI hit and utilized a double steal in the fifth to push their lead to 6-2.
- After Nell earned two strikeouts and a foul out to prevent Northwestern from adding more runs with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the Terriers loaded the bases on a single, two-out walk and two-out hit-by-pitch.
- BU scored a third run off a wild pitch but stranded two on base for the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, thanks in part to the first five Terriers at the plate reaching base.
- After Doherty (walk), sophomore Kieren McHugh (single) and junior Kyomi Apalit (ground out) all plated a run, Christopher delivered a two-RBI single for the 5-0 lead.
- OSU blasted an 0-2 pitch for a solo homer and added a second run in the third before grounding out into a double play.
- The Buckeyes cut the lead even further with the help of a two-out RBI double toward in the fourth and a fifth-inning special.
- BU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and would double the offensive output to 10 runs off five hits.
- OSU kept the pressure on by launching a 2-1 pitch to right for a lead-off homer in the bottom of the sixth, but Ganino kept the lead at four runs thanks to a swinging strikeout.
- The Buckeyes pressured Ganino in the seventh with a lead-off single and two-out single, but Ricard reentered the contest to earn a fly out to center.
- With its first ever victory against Ohio State, BU defeated a third different Big 10 opponent this season following Friday's win against Northwestern and a Feb. 6 victory over Maryland.
- The Terriers have now posted 10 victories against the Big 10 dating back to 2018 under head coach Ashley Waters. Thanks to the 3-1 performance at the Duke Invitational, BU has also increased Waters' number of wins against Power 4 conference opponents to 25.
- With her 26th career homer against Northwestern, Doherty moved into a tie-for-sixth in the Patriot League record book and is now one away from tying Rachel Hebert ('10) for No. 4 in the program record book.
- The Terriers will return to New England to face Yale and New Haven two times apiece on March 7-8 with the Bulldogs serving as hosts.
- BU leads the all-time series against Yale, 16-8, and will visit the Bulldogs for the first time since 1995.
- BU will face New Haven, member of the Northeast Conference, for the first time.
