Softball Sweeps DH With Wins Over Yale and New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Highlighted by nine extra-base hits and Ricard's 19 strikeouts, the Boston University softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-0 victory over host Yale and 8-1 win against New Haven Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (10-10) started off with seven singles against the Bulldogs (3-10) and then tied a program-record with seven doubles against the Chargers (0-7). Collecting two wins, Ricard (8-5) started the day totaling 12 strikeouts in the complete-game performance to set a new Patriot League record at 32 career shutouts.
Junior Kylie Doherty led the offense with five RBIs, helped by a three-run homer against New Haven. Junior Kyomi Apalit finished 4-for-7, while both sophomore Camryn Lyons and freshman Irys Kline went a identical 2-for-5 with three runs scored apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out ahead quickly after Kline, senior Brooke Deppiesse and senior Megan Coyle led off the contest with a walk.
- After Doherty delivered an RBI sac fly to center to plate Kline, Deppiesse scored on a wild pitch and Coyle reached home on Apalit's two-out RBI single to left center.
- The Terriers extended the lead to 5-0 in the second when junior Livia Christopher (1B) and Deppiesse (BB) scored on Doherty's hard grounder through the left side.
- Ricard kept the shutout going into the sixth with a combined nine strikeouts.
- BU added two more runs off two hits with Deppiesse singling to left to plate freshman Madolyn Coupal and Doherty earning a bases-loaded RBI walk to score Kline.
- The Bulldogs broke up the no-hit bid with a pair of two-out singles before Ricard ended the threat with a swinging strikeout.
- Ricard earned a quick 1-2-3 in the seventh to seal the shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the top of the first, Kline doubled down the left field line but was thrown out at home trying to score on Doherty's two-out single to center.
- Senior Olivia DeLong doubled to left to lead off the second but was caught in a double play started by a fly out to center.
- The Chargers struck first in the bottom half with a one-out single and double against sophomore Danika Nell that set up an RBI grounder against senior Haley Ganino.
- UNH threatened again in the third with a two-out single and stolen base, but Ricard entered the circle to earn a ground out to first.
- The Terriers grabbed the lead for good in the fourth with DeLong, sophomore Kieren McHugh and and freshman Madolyn Coupal recording a double for the 2-1 advantage.
- BU extended the lead in the fifth to 6-1 off five hits, including Doherty's three-run homer toward left center.
- Trying to mount a rally, UNH earned a one-out walk and single in the bottom of the sixth, but Ricard earned a pair of swinging strikeouts.
- Lyons opened the seventh with a triple down the right field line and scored on senior Aimee Metz's RBI grounder that was followed by sophomore Cara Edwards' RBI double to left for the 8-1 advantage.
- Ricard added two more strikeouts to claim her second win of the day.
- With her seventh homer of the season, Doherty has now gone yard a combined 27 times, tied-for-fourth most in program history and sixth most in the Patriot League.
- A two-time PL Pitcher of the Year, Ricard earned her 32nd shutout to top the previous PL record of 31 held by Lehigh's Lisa Sweeney ('09), a four-time PL Pitcher of the Year.
- Ricard is now tied with Cassidi Hardy ('11) for the second most in program history with BU Hall of Famer Audrey West ('96) well ahead in first at 47.
- With 82 wins now, Ricard is three away from tying Hardy and Ali DuBois ('21) for the program record.
- Improving to 17-8 all-time in the series against the Bulldogs, BU made its first visit to Yale since 1995.
- The Terriers won the first ever meeting with UNH after the Chargers made the jump up to the Division I and the Northeast Conference from the Northeast 10 conference in Division II.
- BU will compete in rematches against Yale and New Haven on Sunday (March 8) with the Bulldogs serving as hosts.
- The Terriers will first face the Bulldogs at 10:30 a.m. and then conclude the weekend with the Chargers starting at 12:45 p.m.
