GAME 1: BU - 8, Yale - 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kline started off the game with a single to left and advanced to third on Doherty's double, but Yale ended the threat with a strikeout.
- Yale earned a lead-off walk in the bottom of the second before Ricard and junior Livia Christopher combined for the "strike 'em out, throw 'em out" double play to keep the game scoreless.
- The Terriers loaded the bases in the third on Kline's lead-off single and back-to-back two-out walks to set up two-RBI hits from both Lyons (single) and junior Kyomi Apalit (double).
- Yale responded in the bottom half by loading the bases with one out via three singles and nearly scoring two runs on a fielding error, but freshman Madolyn Coupal was able to get the ball home to tag out the second runner to minimize the damage.
- Coyle pushed the lead back to four runs in the top of the fifth by doubling to left center and scoring on junior Sophie Naivar's RBI sac fly.
- One inning later, Coyle added an RBI single, and the Terriers tallied two more in the seventh off Lyons' RBI triple and Christopher's RBI sac fly.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- New Haven threatened sophomore Ava Johnson with a lead-off walk that led to a caught stealing thanks to a strong throw from sophomore catcher Cara Edwards.
- The Chargers shortly thereafter followed with back-to-back two-out singles, but Johnson earned a fly out to left to keep the game scoreless.
- In the bottom half, both Kline (single) and Deppiesse (hit-by-pitch) got on base to set up a two-RBI triple to right center from Coyle, who scored the third run on Doherty's RBI sac fly.
- Trying to mount a rally, UNH started the top of the third with back-to-back walks against Johnson and followed with an RBI single against Ganino, who then earned a 5-3 double play.
- BU quickly retook the three-run lead during the bottom of the third with Naivar singling to center, reaching third on Lyons' single and scoring on sophomore Kieren McHugh's RBI sac fly.
- In the following inning, Deppiesse launched a solo shot to center, and Coyle scored on Naivar's RBI single for the 6-1 advantage.
- During the bottom of the fifth, both Coupal (double) and Deppiesse (triple) delivered an RBI hit, and Doherty blasted the first pitch she saw to lead off the sixth for the game-ending homer.
UP NEXT
- BU will open the home slate with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on Wednesday (March 11) starting at 12:30 p.m.
- The Terriers lead the all-time series, 5-2, with all seven contests taking place in Florida between 2011-2017.
