Terriers Sweep Quinnipiac in Home Opener, Stretch Win Streak to Seven

BOSTON - The Boston University softball team held its home opener on Tuesday afternoon and stretched its win streak to seven games with a sweep of Quinnipiac at BU Softball Field. After opening the day with a 7-0 shutout victory, the Terriers closed the sweep with a 12-1 triumph in five innings.
Senior Kasey Ricard picked up her fourth shutout of the season in the opener, earning nine strikeouts while scattering five hits and issuing just one walk. Four Terriers - senior Brooke Deppiesse, junior Sophie Naivar, junior Kyomi Apalit and freshman Livia Christopher - each had three hits on the day while freshman Madolyn Coupal recorded her second home run of the season in game two. Apalit and Christopher each collected four RBI in the twinbill.
The Terriers now stand at 14-10 on the season while the Bobcats are an even 7-7.
GAME 1: BU - 7, Quinnipiac - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricard and Quinnipiac's Shannon Kendall each pitched a perfect opening frame.
- The Bobcats had runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the second before Ricard caught a line drive to end the threat.
- The Terriers got on the board in the bottom of the second.
- Kylie Doherty worked a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a Naivar single. Apalit followed with a base hit to plate Doherty and the Terriers then loaded the bases with nobody out. Kendall retired the next two batters but Irys Kline singled to left to score Apalit and Camryn Lyons to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead after two innings.
- Megan Coyle led off the bottom of the third with a single and then advanced to third after double by Doherty. Kendall was one out away from escaping the jam but Coyle scored after Lyons was safe on a fielder's choice. Doherty then scored after Lyons stole second to make it 5-0.
- Quinnipiac had the lead runner on in the top of the fourth, but she was thrown out trying to steal second. A two-out single followed, but Ricard struck out the next hitter to keep the Bobcats scoreless.
- The Terriers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth once again thanks to clutch two-out hitting, as a Christopher double scored both Doherty and Naivar.
- Ricard retired the Bobcats in order in the top of the sixth.
- The Terriers threatened to end the game in the bottom of the sixth after the first two batters reached and the leadoff runner advanced to third, but the Bobcats escaped to get one more at-bat.
- Ricard then struck out the final three batters of the game to clinch the shutout.
GAME 2: BU - 12, Quinnipiac - 1 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinnipiac's Mary Fogg led off game two with a double but was thrown out trying to steal third. The Bobcats then drew a walk but Danika Nell induced an inning-ending double play.
- BU got on the board in the top of the first. Kline was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then came across to score thanks to Doherty's two-out single to center.The Bobcats responded in the top of the second. After Nell struck out the leadoff batter, the Bobcats strung together three straight hits, including an RBI double to right center that tied the game at 1-1.
- The Terriers regained the lead in the bottom of the second.
- Coupal knocked in the first run of the frame thanks to a ground-rule double before Deppiesse's RBI single made it 3-1.
- Haley Ganino kept the Bobcats scoreless in the top of the third.
- BU plated two more runs in its half of the third as Coyle led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Apalit single to center.
- Coupal led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to make it 5-1 and Kline immediately followed with a triple before scoring on Deppiesse's single to center.
- Naivar kept the line moving with another single to center and the Terriers eventually loaded the bases with nobody out.
- Quinnipiac got the lead runner at home on a fielder's choice for the first out, but Apalit knocked home two more runs with a single to left. Then, after Lyons drew a one-out walk, Christopher singled down the left-field line to plate two more runs and make it 10-1.
- Two straight walks and a HBP made it 12-1 BU before the Bobcats finally got out of the inning.
- Ganino then worked around a one-out single to end the game.
UP NEXT
- BU will continue its eight-game homestand on Saturday (March 14) when it welcomes Brown and UMass Lowell in the first of a two-day round robin.
- The Terriers will face the Bears at 12:45 p.m. and then take on the River Hawks at 3 p.m.
- Brown and Lowell will face each other at 10:30 a.m.
