Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Holy Cross

BOSTON – Highlighted by six extra-base hits and 11-3 advantage in walks earned, the Boston University softball team claimed a home doubleheader sweep over Holy Cross Saturday afternoon.
With an 11-2 (5) run-rule win and 8-4 come-from-behind victory, the Terriers (39-13, 15-2 PL) claimed sole possession of the program's seventh Patriot League regular season title dating back to 2018, as the Crusaders fell to 8-30 and 4-10 in conference play. Sophomore Camryn Lyons led BU with five hits and senior Brooke Deppiesse scored six runs, while junior Kylie Doherty went yard twice on the way to five RBIs.
Senior Kasey Ricard (28-6) earned a combined six strikeouts over 7.2 innings against six runs allowed, and classmate Haley Ganino (7-2) limited Holy Cross to a pair of hits in 4.1 combined scoreless innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Ricard quickly retired the side in the top of the first, the Terrier offense jumped out to a 3-0 lead with the help of five walks and senior Megan Coyle's single.
- Bella Nugent put the Crusaders on the scoreboard on a solo homer in the top of the second, but HC would not get any closer.
- Deppiesse lead off the bottom half with a walk and scored on Doherty's two-run homer to right to extend the lead to 5-1.
- The Terriers added six runs on five more hits and a defensive error with Doherty delivering a two-run double to create more distance.
- HC earned one more run via walk and Kate Trudgen's two-out RBI triple against Ricard before grounding out three times to Ganino in the run-rule defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Deppiesse quickly grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first with a lead-off double down the first base line and run scored on Coyle's one-out RBI groundout.
- After Ricard ended the top of the second on a pair of swinging strikeouts, Doherty gave her another run with Doherty lofting an 0-2 pitch to right,
- The Crusaders started off the fourth with a strike out looking but bounced back with four runs off four hits, including a two-out three-run homer by Emily McCandless and Anna Brait's solo HR.
- The Terriers mounted their rally in the fifth with three runs off two hits, highlighted by graduate student Megan Coyle's two-RBI single through the left side and Lyons' RBI single to left.
- HC threatened in the top of the sixth on a lead-off walk and one-out single, but Ganino picked off a liner toward center and quickly threw to first to claim the double play.
- BU carried the momentum into the bottom of the sixth with three runs off three hits and two errors, highlighted by Deppiesse's RBI single to left and junior Sophie Naivar's RBI sac fly to left.
- The Terriers and Crusaders will wrap up the Turnpike Trophy series on Sunday (April 26) at 12 p.m.
