Softball Run-Rules Holy Cross, 23-8, to Complete Series Sweep
April 26, 2026 | Softball
Junior Kylie Doherty delivered a pair of three-run homers to help the 2026 Patriot League regular season champion Terriers (40-13) finish conference play at 16-2 with both freshman Irys Kline and senior Megan Coyle also going yard against the Crusaders (8-31, 4-11 PL). Both squads utilized four pitchers apiece with sophomore Danika Nell (4-4) the only one to pitch a scoreless inning, as she earned four strikeouts to limit Holy Cross to only two walks over 3.1 innings.
Senior Megan Coyle and junior Sophie Naivar joined Doherty in touching home plate four times, while both senior Brooke Deppiesse and sophomore Camryn Lyons scored three runs apiece. After successfully pinch-hitting twice on Saturday, senior Olivia DeLong earned the start and finished with three RBIs off two walks and a sac fly. Junior Kyomi Apalit and Kline also earned three RBIs with Apalit reaching the mark on a triple, sac fly and infield grounder.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After opening the contest with a triple, the Crusaders took advantage of a throwing error with an RBI sac fly, two walks and hit-by-pitch to grab 2-0 lead against senior Kasey Ricard.
- Holy Cross followed up with an RBI single to left against senior Haley Ganino but then grounded into a 5-2-3 double play.
- BU also quickly loaded the bases in the first on a walk, single and fielding error to set up Naivar's RBI walk and back-to-back RBI sac fly outs to right from Lyons and DeLong.
- Apalit gave BU its first lead on a two-out RBI triple to center, but the Crusaders responded in the top of the second with five runs off four hits against Ganino and sophomore Ava Johnson.
- Nell entered the game in relief with two on and two outs before striking out Holy Cross' Brooke Ventrelle to keep the deficit at 8-4.
- The Terriers though rallied back in the bottom of the second with six runs off two hits, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a fielding error.
- Doherty delivered her first of two three-run blasts to cut the deficit to 8-7, and DeLong added an RBI walk to tie the contest.
- Apalit and junior Livia Christopher both earned an RBI on ground outs to help the Terriers grab the lead for good, 10-8.
- Nell retired the next six Crusaders she faced and overcame two walks in the fifth with two fly outs and her fourth strikeout of the contest.
- At the plate, the Terriers added six more runs in the third off six walks, Lyons' RBI single and Kline's three-run blast to center.
- Looking to earn their second run-rule victory over the Crusaders, BU added seven runs in the fourth with the help of four walks and two homers, one a lead-off solo shot by Coyle and the second a three-run homer by Doherty.
- BU is on a five-game win streak to cut UMass' series lead to 15-9.
- Teams last faced off in 2024 with the Terriers earning a 2-0 home victory on an RBI sac fly and RBI walk during the second inning. Ricard totaled seven strikeouts against two walks allowed in four innings of work.
- Last time at UMass in 2023, BU claimed a 3-1 victory with Ricard totaling 11 strikeouts against two hits in the complete-game win.
